I want you to realize that this system in total is 12,000 US dollars. That's the source, preamp, amplifier, cables and speakers. The speakers are 1,200 US dollars.

There is a real lesson in this and it is the opposite of what we have been taught.

So here we have the speaker, which are uniquely great I admit, but still only 10% the total system cost. See how many dealers, or manufactures think this is the answer. My guess is that most would put the speakers at of 51% of the total system cost. I mean they are what you see, they are what you hear the sound come from so they should be the most expensive part... you've all heard this. It's clearly BS. I've know this for 30 years. Started in the hobby as a speaker designer and realized after getting into amplification that the amplifiers were what was making the speakers disappear, not the "time alignment" or design premise of the speaker. It was a hard reality to accept at the time, but it has held true since I realized it. This is basically proof.

My takeaway tonight is that the cables are probably and literally as important as the amplifier both of which are 10x more important than the actuall speakers you hook them to.  And I don't think 10x is an exaggeration in many cases.

Very interesting Steve, and mirrors my conclusions over more than two decades of listening. Using your amps I discovered that they led to examining everything else as a weak link, source to speakers and I discovered about midway how important cabling is and went BIG on that. Net result for me is a system now that I can be happy with for a long long time and just relax into the music, which is the whole goal.

Is this new speaker wire expensive/more money then the ZSTYX? Any details you can share?

The Zen Master Series Baffles had me convinced a piano must be reproduced by a big speaker, but dammit now I have to admit it can nearly be done by something the size of a toaster.

I'll post the videos soon.

Yes, and a big payoff for having monobloc amp and really short speaker cables. Mine are 18 inches, and made of the same wire as the ZSTYX. Not a lot can go wrong with the signal in 18 inches.

That's correct.  Once people realize they want to spend serious money on cables, mono blocks take on a whole new appeal.

If we must have a long cable run somewhere - between source and preamp, between preamp and poweramp, between poweramp and speaker; is there a best place to put the long cable?

Steve,

Please give some details about what you have cookin’ with your new wire. Our Decware systems need it 😎

Thanks,

Geno

Too early to say much, so far I am focused on testing a bi-wire cable for the Tube Tots and it's going well.

I am experimenting with OCC vs OFC copper and silver conductors -- in my favorite Teflon insulators using a couple different braids.  Using ZSTYX as a reference, I have been testing many different wires and braidings to see if I can beat the reference.

One cable will cost less than ZSTYX and one cable will cost more, both will be used during this years DECFEST, and probably become available sometime this winter.

Oxygen Free Copper is a thing of the past so far as I am hearing.  Ohno Continuous Cast Copper is a whole new game.  Being able to draw a single crystal hundreds of feet long vs. OFC copper that has 100's of crystals per foot is a serious game changer from what I am hearing.

I did similar testing about a decade ago and fell in love with Ohno copper and silver. In my main system my interconnects have Ohno copper and Ohno silver conductors, my power cables and speaker cables have Ohno copper conductors. No contest for me! Glad you are experimenting in this direction.
