arcing throughout a rectifier
11/01/20 at 18:04:49

someone sent me a .mov file showing a rectifier that i had sold, arcing throughout the tube. it looks like electrical pulses everywhere. i've never seen this.

unfortunately i cant post the file on this forum because a .mov file isn't allowed.

it's a tube that was barely ever used. a 5Y3GT.

is this an impending failure of the tube? perhaps the long journey overseas has caused some sort of physical issue with the tube.

any ideas?

thanks, brad

This is why I stopped selling stuff on ebay (assuming that is where you sold it).

An arcing rectifier certainly could be a bad tube. Or it could be used in an amp that isn't spec'd for it. Or it could be a bad amp. Or it could have been dropped. Hard to say for certain, esp. across an ocean. Sorry I don't have any better ideas, but as far as ebay is concerned t seems like the customer is always right and the seller always has to make it right.

Hard to say with certainty what the cause may be.

I have a Cary SLA 70 Sig that had a pair of 5U4G Sovtek rectifiers.
Looked like a blue lightning storm in each tube every time I fired the amp up.

Finally called Cary and they informed me that the Sovtek 5U4G was not a good match for the SLA 70, they recommended GZ37s.

Found a pair of GZ37s and all was right with the amp.

BTW, the Sovtek 5U4Gs never tested bad.
