Using a single Rachel in mono
04/29/20 at 19:43:48

Hello I am new to the forum and to my SE 341.5 Rachel.
I am using the Rachel with a PrimaLuna Prologue preamp.
I have a single Rachel and would like to hear it in mono.
Can I do this by simply connecting a jumper from the two positive speaker terminals and leaving both speakers and preamp plugged in as it is now ?
I would be hearing a 12 watt mono Rachel coming out of both speakers correct ?
How does jumping the + speakers terminals effect the impedance ?
I am using Zu Omen 12 ohm DW speakers.
Thank you for any help with this.

Not sure how that would work. You would connect one mono unit to each speaker, no?

I guess that is what I should do just listen to one speaker and get a taste of what 12 watts sound like.

Exactly. Twelve watts is pretty high for SET. you might like it. Or then again you might not.

My problem with Rachel is that she is too laid back. If I had one I would have the input bias set higher. I like the more lively sound. The SE84UFO has that switch to vary the input bias.

I used an SE34i.2+ with my Zu Druids, and before that an Almarro 205, which has an output similar to the Zen. My experience is that in spite of the efficiency rating, those Zu 10" full rangers need some power to really get moving. After the SE34 came a Torii MK IV, which had plenty of power for the Zus and was pretty fantastic, especially considering the controls and the tube rolling possibilities.

All that is to say I predict you'll like having 12 watts/channel into the Omens, but that still may not be enough. Rather than buy another Rachael and run them mono, you might want to hold out for a Torii. I don't think you'll regret it.

I think you may be right about that.
I am having to crank my PrimaLuna Preamp a bit more than
I use to.
The first Decware I heard was a Zen Torii about 12 years ago.
It was playing thru a pair of Zu speakers never forgot how much
fun the combination was to listen to.
And I am more than ready to get off the upgrade merry go round
I love the Rachel and jumped on it because it was a Buy It
Now eBay deal.
Can you play the Zen Torii in mono ?

Beautiful but out of my price range.
I think the Zen Torii MKIV will be the mothership for me.
Steve.
