Throw out old CDs...
04/15/20 at 04:01:18

Why is it every website I run across that has a list of things to get rid of has CDs in the list.  They always suggest that you should stream them or upload them on your PC.  Why would they say that?  I love my CDs.  They sometimes put vinyl on the list, too, and I don't understand that especially since vinyl has made a comeback.

So, would you get rid of your CDs?

It is an odd thing. Some people worship trends. If something new comes along they try to support it by telling us to abandon what came before, even if it was better!

To echo what Lon said… I would never in a million years throw out my CD collection.  Now I have archived my entire collection for preservation purposes, but that’s more for convenience and easy accessibility.

Even as much as I hate physical media I still hang onto my CD's.

Computers and back ups go burp every so often and everything goes bye bye.

Better safe than sorry.

So I guess I will be clinging to a CD in my right hand and a gun in my left when they pry them from my cold dead body. (I'm a lefty).

Donnie, et al.,

My thoughts exactly! CD's are the ultimate back-up music system. Especially when your cable networks or WiFi is down.

Never!  In fact, I’m buying CD’s at a faster rate now than ever.  I’ve probably purchased 200+ CD’s, SACD’s already this year!

During the I-Pod era, I ripped my CD collection to MP3 for portable DAC use. I kept adding to the collection, and rip "Lossless FLAC," and keep music files on hard drive for listing on my 'Main Stereo System'. "KEEP YOUR CD COLLECTION" as a historical archive.

After I went through my archive phase and backed up my entire collection..I put them in storage just to save space.

Now I find myself buying select CD’s here and there thanks to Steve and some guys here on the Decware forum.  Steve used the a song from the Sid Ramin Orchestra to feature the ZFL baffles that he played on vinyl.  The song was so moving that I had to have it.  Streaming services only had one song......so I bought the disc on Amazon.

In another instance....Tidal recently deleted the album “Bassics: The best of the Ray Ray Brown Trio” from its catalog.  It was one of my favorite albums I used to play regularly.  Needless to say....I had to buy it.

In summary...my musical exploration and expansion due to the Decware forum and streaming services, has now tipped the scales for me to start buying CD’s again.   😄

I went to the external hard drive approach and very happily got rid of my cds 2 years ago.

Imo they're artifacts that have gone by way of the 8 track, cassette, etc.  Also all that room is no longer wasted.

I ripped all my CDs/vinyl 2 years ago to lossless flac as backup and copied to MP3 format so I could have all my music on hand in the phone(over 12,000 tracks). Some of the places explored have no cell service.
There are times that I think of lightening up the collection but just can't pull it together. Nah, it took too much time gathering the collection to let it go. Not going to happen, I guess.

I got rid of all of my cd's after ripping them simply due to the inconvenience of moving them and removing one more component from my system. They just become so heavy and bulky after a while.

I have mainly hung onto rare/out of print CDs but I make sure I digitize them because unfortunately CDs do degrade over time (tho it takes a long time like 20-40 years). Vinyl is definitely the preferred long-term medium for music IMO.

Interesting. I have had CDRs go bad but not CDs. I have CDs I bought over 30 years ago that play perfectly, and they spent their first ten years in non-climate controlled living conditions which did cause a few spots of "mold" on the artwork but not the discs.

I also have CDRs that were not usable after 15 years. My first CD bought around 1985 is still good. It is Billy Ocean's "Suddenly". I remember CDs where relative new at that time and the dynamics/details were shocking in the album.
