Rectifier Socket
04/02/20 at 18:11:45

My CSP3 is a 2019 build. I have rolled a few tubes through this socket and now whatever tube I put in there is loose. This will sometimes cause the tube to lose power and shut down the amp.

The socket should be able to go back and forth between tubes. Maybe the socket in my amp is not made with good spring steel to clamp the pins?

Is this common?
Is there an easy fix?

I really don't want to send this in for repair with whats going on in the world today.

I had a similar problem with a rectifier socket. I didn’t want to send mine in either so I used a socket saver and it eliminated  the problem. In my estimation the socket should be replaced but I’ll wait until a later date. I use this amp at my cabin so it’s mostly not on my mind.

My experience is that any tube socket will get loose over time, especially if you do a lot of tube rolling. Octal sockets like for your rectifier are actually pretty easy to fix.. You can use a very small flat blade screwdriver to bend the metal flanges in the socket holes to tighten them back up. They don't need to be bent much, just a little. I've done it many times now without damage or drama.

Power off and capacitors drained, of course.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll have a look at the socket savers but in the meantime I'll try bending in the little clamps.

That's good info. I'll take a look at the loose socket in a bit. Thanks.

I ordered the Socket Savers. I took months for them to arrive but I happy with them. They seem well built and they work well.

I'll be ordering an other set for the power tubes. Hope it doesn't take 3 months again! I think they lost my first order.

If you ordered from Hong Kong or China it was COVID that kept your order in a holding pattern for months. I had two items I ordered just before the virus was news and they never made it after being in "tracking" limbo for months. Postal services were not sending items to the US and when they did, items were quarantined all over the globe inch by inch. Here's hoping your next order is a smoother operation.

Well this issue reared it's ugly head once again!

Even with the socket savers. It can't be the tubes as they all work in my SE34I.5 amp.

I'll pull the CSP3 out of the system again see if I can tighten up the socket connectors.

I'll report back...
