16 Ohm Speakers on 8 Ohm Taps
07/31/19 at 21:25:22

Looking into buying a used ZMA to go with a pair of Tonians I just bought with 16 ohm PHY drivers.  The amp in question has 4 ohm and 8 ohm taps according to the owner.  How much degradation (if any) would I get using the 8 ohm taps to drive a 16 ohm speaker?  Speaker in question is 99db efficiency of that makes a difference here.

I know in general it's OK but my understanding is that any potential dropoff in sound quality from using the wrong taps varies on amp to amp basis.  Wasn't sure what the case was with the ZMA.

Thanks. Smiley

You can perhaps send the ZMA to Steve and get the 16 ohm transformer taps connected to the binding post. Because your ZMA is built for 4 and 8 ohm output the 16 ohm transformer leads will have been cut off leaving a small bit behind with shrink tubing on the end for protection. It may be possible to extend these 16 ohm leads by adding wire to them.

Thanks for the reply.  I have to factor that in to what I'd pay the guy for the amp...

True.

Or a local tech might be cheaper.

For myself being who I am cannot live with mismatches for long.

For certain the speaker output will be about half that of rated, not certain of other effects.
