MDF, LDF & HDF?
07/26/19 at 04:48:37

MDF is Medium density fiberboard. This has me wondering, is there also a Low density fiberboard and a High density fiberboard?  If so, do these have a usefulness for speaker cabinets?  I ask because I have only ever heard of MDF being used for fiberboard speaker construction.

Yes there are but the reason MDF is used is because its cheap, easy to work with, stable and easily available. I believe the LDF is particle board and used a lot by furniture companies. I hate the stuff because it always breaks when you put in screws. HDF is used for flooring and not sure what sizes it comes in or how easily you can get it. The only way to really tell if they would be a good materials for speakers is to make a pair and compare the sound.
Also if you have not seen the video you should watch the link that was posted in the Steve's BIG BETSY project, very informative.
I am a fan of using Baltic Birch plywood for my speaker builds. I just get better results but it is 2 or 3 times more than MDF.

Thanks John, for the information.
That HDF flooring material sounds like it might be worth a trial.
