6N2p acceptable sub foe 12ax7?

I recently read online that a 6N2P is an acceptable sub for a 12ax7.

Is that true?

Has anyone tried this, and if so, how does it compare?

Gene:

The only problem is that the 6N2P is 6 volt and the 12ax7 is 12 volt. I thought I heard something about people subbing it though.

All, FYI

I ordered 2 6N2P to try as a sub for a 12AX7 so I could save a little money in the long run, since they are so much cheaper.

They DID NOT work in my ZP3.

Just because a tube will fit into a socket, does not mean it will work. I check online with sites that give information about subbing one tube for another. As already mentioned, the heater element for the 6N2P is designed for a 6 volt supply, whereas the heater (filament) of the 12 AX7 is designed for a 12 volt heater supply. Also to be considered is the pinout, i.e. what each pin is connected to internally. Lastly, the design of the tube parameters itself may be different.

Hey Gene:

You can use the 6N2P in your SE84UFO but not the ZP3.

In the Zen it will be a much brighter tube.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jim.  I definitely don't want brighter from my amp.  I'm very happy with the 6N1P or 6N5P I've been using. Nice and warm. No plans on rolling these ever again.
