Sophia Electric Aqua 274B in Decware Amp?
05/17/18 at 05:27:00

During the 12 or 13 years I ran Cary Audio 2A3 mono blocks in my main system, I found Sophia Electric tubes (both 2A3 and 300B) to sound far better than any NOS tubes, regardless of price.  Has anyone tried the relatively new Sophia Electric Aqua 274B or the new Sophia Electric EL34 tubes in your Decware amp?

In the Replacement Tubes forum there is this thread https://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1504051438

I believe some others have tried them as well and are mentioned in other threads, just can't recall them all. Try to search "Sophia Electric" at the top right of the page. It works well for some words and well not so much for other words.

Actually, don’t use the search box in the upper right corner of the page, it sucks for searching the forum content.

There is a search tool specifically for the forum section of the website.  If you look at all of the buttons toward the top of the forum, you will see a “Search” button with an icon of a magnifying glass.  It is in between the “Help” and “Members” buttons.  Use that whenever you want to find anything in the forum posts.  It works fantastic.

I use the Sophia 274B in my UFO2 but not my CSP3.  I have compared it with TYPE 80 Globes and ST, Mullard CV593/GZ32 and other rectifiers.  It has become my rectifier of choice.  Bought a second as a spare.

However I run it in combination with the CSP3 in which I run the AWV AS4.  I have not tried it in the UFO2 without the CSP3 and so cannot comment on that.

I've started to use the Sophia Electric Aqua 274B rectifiers in my 25th Anniversary SE84UFO3 amplifiers. An excellent rectifier embodying the characteristics of many of my favorites. Expensive, and I've paid for them so I'll be using them. I tried them in my Taboo Mk IV as well and they work excellently there.

I have three excellent choices and favorites for the Monoblocks: Tung-Sol Type 80, RCA 5V4G, and the Sophia Electric Aqua 274B. The Sophia Electric has inched itself ahead of the other two. I have a 25th Anniversary CSP3 on order and will try it there. . . .

Upon some discussions here, I also bought a Sophia Electric Aqua 274B.  On my system (SE84UFO), I like it the best along with the Mullard NOS GZ32. I have not tried it with my TABOO mkIII.  On that system, I prefer some NOS RCA 5Y3GT's and somehow did not prefer the GZ32 which I find more similar to the Sophia...

Lon, What is the pin configuration on the Tung Sol Type 80?  I’d like to try one and wasn’t sure if I needed an adapter.

You do need a 4-pin to 8-pin adaptor, as the Type 80 is a 4-pin tube. They are easy to find on ebay and not necessarily expensive. I have two "bakelite" bases and three porcelain bases.
