TORII JR INPUT TUBE UPDATE
11/08/17 at 03:15:56

The TORII JR is designed to use your favorite 6922 input tube, one per side. The 6922 is fast, clear and dynamic.
We have shipped the amp all summer with a new Chinese 6922 tube called a 6N11. It is the fastest we have heard.

If we could get consistent results in a TORII JR from the 6N1P that would have been the tube of choice to ship the amplifier with because it is so warm by comparison.

A NEW TUBE OPTION for the TORII JR is the Russian 6N5P.  It has the warmth of a 6N1P with the clarity of the 6922. The tube has a touch less gain which helps keep the amp from getting aggressive sounding.

I will be shipping the TORII JR with these fine sounding input tubes while quantities last because as the designer of the amplifier, it sounds the way it's supposed to with this input tube, which is musical, honest and seductive.

This tube should also work in place of the 6N1P in any of our amplifiers  and pre-amplifiers too.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for this update. I have had the Torii Jr for about a month now, it's first owner put about 5-600 hours on it. I have a few questions/advice needed, but I will address the gain issue here.

I have a very good tube DAC - it outputs +2V via the single ended connections. Running directly into the Torii Jr, it seems that it sometimes is challenging to get the volume I want - I listen 99% low volume. Running the ERR speakers, which I guess are around 91-93db. I've had the ERRs for several years, and tried them with the SE84CKC and loved the sound quality, but always felt it was lacking punch, and not quite getting the drivers moving. So here I am with the Jr (which you suggested in a phone call at one point). It definitely has a great sound - can be very sweet, or punchy when called for. I like it.

So, my issue is that as soon as I turn up the volume even a bit, it is already where I want it, maybe a hair too loud. When I try to lower it, because I am so close to the leftmost end of the dial, sometimes the sound just cuts off. Anotherwords, I've maxed out the quiet level!

So, question for you - do you think this tube type in the input slot will help me? Right now I am running Siemens grey place E88CC matched pair. Thanks for any info you may have.

Best,
Matt

I just bought 8 of these tubes from an ebay seller in the Ukraine for $26.74.  I'll try them in my CSP3 and ZMA.  Right now I'm running the Chinese 6N11 tubes that Stever recommended a while back.  Those were quite good (I did have one partial failure so far) but these are 1/3 the price.  Not much of a risk.

I've been noticing that I seem to have less than normal range at lower volumes on my ZMA since I put a 6085 in the 12AU7 spot in my ZP3.  I like the 6085 so maybe these will compensate?

How about the Chinese 6N11? Are they the fastest tubes for this spot, you think? I am interested in trying a pair from ebay, but it's tough to make out what the label is saying. I this this is them...

Those are the tubes I currently have in my CSP3 and ZMA.

Steve said about these tubes:   Quote:
On the other end of the scale is the most pristine detail nearly to a fault tube, the new Shuguang 6n11.

Hi Matt,

The 6N5P has a bit less gain which should help your situation a bit. That said I don't understand how with a 2 volt source and ERR speakers you wouldn't be able to reach at least the half way point on the dial for a normal listening session.

Steve

A note about 6N11:  First several batches I got of these tubes all tested nearly perfect. Really impressive.  Last few batches of these have been all over the map with about 30% going into the trash.  By that I mean they spec out wildly different and do not sound like the original batch.  I do still have some in stock, however I am no longer able to recommend these Chinese tubes due to quality control issues.  As a replacement I am using the 6N5P from Russia, it still has better resolution than a 6N1P, and a nice silky sound with a touch less gain.

I got these tubes today and I am very pleased!  They sound great and are an amazing value.  I think I'll be getting some backups.  3 bucks a tube, how can you beat that!   Cool

They all look NOS.  6 of the 8 have red paint on the tip.  I have no idea what that signifies.  The best part is that I got a page out of a Russian newspaper TV guide.

I just bought 12 more for $30.47 delivered from a different Russian seller on ebay.  They sound as good or better than anything I've had in their place.  I don't notice any loss of gain either.  (6N5P)

SonicSeeker, how do you like the Russian 6N5P tubes so far?  Really liking mine, even though they weren't hand selected by Steve.

Steve,

I am so glad I saw this! I just had a 6922 blow and was going to drop in replacement. I quickly purchased a pair of these from you instead of 6922. (Im)patiently awaiting the tubes.

/Ron
