Well, being home a few days.....
03/03/17 at 18:44:42

.....sick with the Shingles (the antiviral + antibiotics and right eye ointment are now kicking in), ......back to work on Monday - I hope?...

.....I put the PAC-S's in my downstairs Rig, out of my Dish DVR. I like um'! Now, after 3 days with them in.....they open up Sirius XM Radio very nicely/relaxed - detailed/subtle and weightier. Glad I got them.

AND I could not resist: I ordered an Schiit Saga Preamplifier (to much time on my hands and in pain/Shingles)! My curiosity could not be contained anymore. Hope to have it for next weekend!

Hye Stone. Oh crap! I hope shingles didn't get you too bad. It's not something I would wish on anyone! Get well and I hope the discomfort isn't too much.

Thanks Acetone. No doubt, would not wish on anyone. My eye is now safe and I'm getting better...... .

I'm excited about getting my Schiit Saga line stage. Hear if it can provide some gain, when I want it in my System and is it transparent (enough)....to be in my Listening Room System, when I want it in the chain?

Well, being home + Saga coming.....

My Schiit Saga did ship yesterday! I will have it Thursday afternoon if not earlier that day (FedEx is very good here for early day deliveries/the day of).

I look forward to comparing passive to tube on the fly... . I got the SAGA first and might get the Freya to compare and return one.

I found a good thread about the two Pre's with some good info/ongoing!
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f8-general-forum/schiit-saga-vs-freya-31452/

Main reason to try a Pre again:
~Fun
~Remote control Volume (!)
~Schiit's good reputation (economies of scale/price points)
~Possibly the most transparent in either passive (obviously) or in tube (+JFET with the Freya)

~AND most important; maintaining the influence of my ZDSD's output transformer's and the signature's of my NOS Platinum tube rolling's in my ZMA (input pair and inverter pair stages).

"I'm excited about getting my Schiit Saga line stage. Hear if it can provide some gain,"

No gain from the Saga, need the Freya for that.

Saga specs:
Gain: Approximately 1 (0dB) through either passive or active stage

Freya specs:
JFET Buffer Gain: 1

Tube Gain: 5 (14dB)

Yes, but as with all of Steve's Amps....I have gain with the ZMA obviously and to attenuate the output of my ZDSD with Saga to ride the gain of ZMA........ .

However, as with my curiosity of the Saga intrigue's me...so to, I'll be calling Valencia to get the Freya = fun!

I was intrigued to see if the Passive mode and Passive Tube Buffer mode, they call:
"A unique active stage that uses a hybrid tube buffer?
Gain: Approximately 1 (0dB) through either passive or active stage
Maximum Output: >10V RMS (active stage)"
.....the
Saga can attenuate my ZDSD....and with riding the gain of my ZMA.....give me a volume control from my seat transparently (enough). AND most important; maintaining most of the influence of my ZDSD's output transformer's and most of the signature's of my NOS Platinum tube rolling's in my ZMA (input pair and inverter pair stages).

I don't know how they did it for the price?! Now, first off, no preamp is absolutely transparent and I have had quite a few in here/including DAC's w/Pre:
Auralic Vega, PS Audio PWT & PWD, PS Audio Direct Stream DAC, NAD M51 (twice). Linear Tube Audio Pre, CSP3 and Audio Research LS17 SE.

I only have 8 hours on the Saga. You would swear it is an all active Pre?! The 64 step attenuation is spot on and quality. I only have my ZMA at 9 0'clock (up from 0 gain which is at 6 o'clock). The active stage that uses a hybrid tube buffer, is more than subtle, from using the passive. Yet, it is staying out of the way more, than the list above DAC Pre's and Pre's that have been in here. I am baffled they can provide this level of board trace quality/staying out of the way of my ZDSD's great output tranny's.

After she burns in for awhile more.....I'll report back. The stock tube stays for now too (6SN7), while I wrap my brain around this piece.

Now, the Purity of the ZMA, with the ZDSD is a match made in Heaven.
I will be using this straight connection more times than not (85% of the time/picking an estimated percentage). But, going on my 9th hour with the Saga....I can't believe how much she can stay out of the way of the music. Not as good as my CSP3 so far. However, as I said above/very impressive. Even if it stays pat the way it is....it's staying to do duty for some of my recordings that need it and the bonus is this precise volume control from my chair.

With a lot more hours on my Saga.....she is no CSP3. Man, if Steve would put the CSP3 in a chassis with remote control......he would need to hire two part time men/women to keep up with demand/IMO.

What the Schiit Saga "is"-is pretty damn clean and dynamic. How this active buffer and passive deal works this well.....I don't know/it shouldn't. What I do know, is this weekend the Saga replaces my Rotel 1062 Preamp, in my downstairs Rig. I have had the 1062 in my Listening Room just to hear if it could stay out of the way......and it was not good. Now, the way the Saga performed (way better) in my Listening Room, than the Rotel 1062.....I look forward to getting it in my other Rig..... .

I am enjoying my ZMA direct from ZDSD right now and the purity of harmonics, imaging, air with soundstage....can't be beat. Best of all, I get to differentiate between my Mullards, Ediswan's and Tungsram's......bliss.

That is exactly what I did when creating the new ZTPRE.

The CSP3 is a classic and when coming out with the ZTPRE I wanted that legacy / signature to remain unchanged, so I simply created 2 CSP3's in a single chassis to achieve a fully balanced preamp.  A ZTPRE is actually two CSP3's in a differential pair... with a remote volume.

However, and I don't think I'm being selfish saying this..... . I believe their is a very good market for the CSP3 with Jupiter caps and Remote. I don't need or want the ZTPre at $3735.00 (I would need configured) + 629.00 for a ZBit.

As great as it would be/ZTPre, all I need is.......

Half the chassis of the ZTPre with a single CSP3 in it with remote volume and and that beautiful face plate with IR hole.

I only want to utilize one input tube NOS and one tube each, NOS per output....since I use NOS tubes....I only want the expense of 3 NOS tubes...not 6 (with this simplicity and fidelity).

Use SS rectification. I'm out of the rectifier business/for me. I know, that this is part of the CSP3 character; however, you have utilized it in the ZTPre and ZMA....I'm sure it would be stellar from you, in the new CSP3-R (R stands for Remote  8-)).

Maintain the great adjustable voltage output. I used 7/21, 8/24 and 9/27, for my NOS output tubes and fully open for my NOS input tube. THIS IS PLENTY of OUTPUT, when I want a PRE in the chain for more weight and density.....for a bunch of my recordings. Your CSP3, is the only one that will do it for me.

The standard two inputs and one output with mono output (single ended /RCA, is all I need/one needs, with my Cabling an your voltage output adjustability).

Bring it around third and wave it home at $2095.00 to $2195.00.

My 2 cents......don't think you could make them fast enough.

Ahhh, with more seasoning in and A-B-A'in..... . The Saga is staying out of the way while contributing weight with my Mullard's shinning through in the mid-range.

I have my ZMA at 10 o'clock (6 o'clock is zero gain). This is the perfect height for the ZMA to be set at and use the Saga to attenuate my ZDSD's stellar output. Increased soundstage and focus very much so/more than with the ZMA alone.....I am tad bit stunned here..... .

With more time on the Saga (I've had it a week now), I'm pretty damn shocked (because of the low cost). The board and traces in it-are impressive and is an solidly built unit. The pictures on the website, do not do this piece justice.

I'm glad I did not bring it downstairs yet! I will hear if I have the same opinion about her this time next week......as she continues to season in some more.

I wish you still had your CSP3 to compare with it.  I'm thinking of pulling mine out again just for another comparison but I generally like the weight and I don't notice any veiling.  (Vinyl front end though.)

Hi Archie. I never should have sold my CSP3. However, in my reply #14 and #15.....is what I want in one (CSP3-R), to bring another back in. Life is short, build it and they will come. Or, if Steve wants to custom build one for me in a box...I'm not to fussy.

I'm using/listening to the Saga right now.....she continues to impress and burn in. She might end up doing close to 50/50 duty, in and out with my ZMA. Passive pre selection or active buffer choice, should not be performing like an active Preamplifier.....but, you ought to have this in your chain, seeing and hearing is believing. The more she cooks in (about 35 hours now), the better she is getting.

These two new Pre's have only been out since December. If they are being dismissed because of the low prices.....then one is doing one's self a disservice. The Saga would not be in my 17k Rig if it was not (now) getting out of the way and continues to improve. Moffat and company do know how to piss off the establishment.

Now, put in perspective, the ZMA alone has a purity that still stands alone. (Again: The reason for the Pre, is for a bunch of my recordings that need a little weight and density......opens up the stage too).

However, for this Pre to be besting: Auralic Vega, PS Audio PWD, PS Audio Direct Stream DAC, NAD M51 (twice), Linear Tube Audio Pre, CSP3 and Audio Research LS17 SE. I did not like the 6H30 tube in the AR, a lot don't,

.......is something.

......running my Mullard's/input's with Telefunken's for inverter's.

Oh, and the Remote to the Saga, is all it needs to be....the precision volume/gain control and balance of each channel....should not be allowed in this price range either.

I've actually got a Saga coming in this weekend.  I'll be using it with a pair of Quicksilver Horn Amps.  If it's as good as you say it is, I'll be very pleased.

Look forward to your impressions Seikosha. Hit the 30 hour mark on her and she took off for me. No brainer, at the price to try.

.......Has me thinking, "do I bring in the Freya to witness the JFET output"?  I will need to decide.

With another 3 days of running in the Saga..... . The little Schiit ain't no CSP3. However, no Pre is absolutely transparent and as little as I will be using this little Schitt in my System/chain; she is staying!

This Saga has no business getting out of the way as well as it does for the price (and doing what a Pre should do for a bunch of my Recordings).

Recommended ~ yes. However, the purity of the ZMA driven alone, by my ZDSD, designed by Steve to do so, is a benchmark that cannot be beat, in my 37 years in this wonderful hobby.
