What are these speakers called? They are almost completely flat and have a response that's amazing! They come on the Teac MC D32i.

Probably electrostats. Basically it's a frame wrapped in Mylar, or some other film, and the material is excited with the current that would normally drive a voice coil.

It sounds fast because the material is so light.

What if I put one in a sub box so that I use say,3ft cube and 12in square of electrostatic... What's the cone area plus say 5%of the rubber surround of a typical 12in. Woofer? Calculate the math or use a square surround and copy volumes ? I imagine that a film could be made stiff enough...

Whoa!Make a flat wound VC as the cone and... Well that'll be difficult... Maybe... And use a rare earth magnets.

Figure out how to reduce impedance and still keep it very light. Maybe with no vents it would be faster than a "normal" woofer?

If the VC is wrapped around some paperclip size wire then wrapped flat along the surface of the "cone" it would work.
