CSP Rectifier

Help out a guy that gets confused with tubes.
I read the hundreds of previous posts on tube rolling and I got some ideas but mostly I'm shooting in the dark at this point.

Currently, on the CSP I have a Sovtek 5Y3GT.  This is the original tube that came with the unit.

Can someone suggest a tube, reality-priced, that might give me a different kind of character?  What kind of character?  I don't know; just something different.  Hopefully different in a positive way.

This is a learning experience for me and I'd rather not spend $$$ on tubes that don't make much of a change.

Bueller?  Anyone?

Thanks in advance...

I'd recommend the Valve Arts 274B. That is not like ordinary 274Bs which might stress the preamp, it's more a big bottled 5U4G which does not present a problem for the preamp. This should give a big sound field and a crisper, open sound (in my experience). I got mine from cryoset.com

That said in my CSP2+ and my ZP3 I use 5Y3G rectifiers by RCA and Philco; these are like yours but a "bottle shape." That tube type just works best for my system as far as accuracy and tonal balance.

I ordered a Valve Arts 274B.  The price was right.  Let's see what happens.

ive been stuck on mullard 5ar4 metal base in csp3, and rca 5u4g in zp3 for over 6mths now.
the 5ar4 black base is pretty good too at much less cost.

I found a RTC(ATC?) tube in a box of stuff; 5RGYS.  I don't remember even buying this.  I put into the CSP.  I fired it up.  I couldn't really tell any difference from the Sovtek 5Y3GT that I'm currently using.  Bummer.

The  Valve Arts 274B arrived yesterday and I installed it.  I let it warm up for about 30 minutes and I let the music rolled.  It sounds very good but it sounds like the Sovtek.  I also ordered a Mullard as suggested and I'll try that one tonight.

I'm wondering if the CSP reacts well to different rectifiers or maybe the SS Van Alstine doesn't change its signature.

I don't know.

It could be good or bad.

Interesting. I have never heard a Sovtek 5Y3 so I didn't know what to expect but did NOT expect the Valve Art to sound the same. Sorry about that. Let it burn in for a while, if it's a cryo'd one it takes a while to reveal its real character.

Lon, I have ears of tin to some extent so it may sound different but I can't hear it.

Then repeat after me: "My system sounds excellent. My system sounds excellent. I love it." Just enjoy your system and log out of decware.com.

Lon, as always, you are correct.

But, I must admit that besides listening to music I get a certain joy from tinkering with the hardware.  It is fun.  You put in a tube and you stand back and see what happens.

In my experience, the tube that reacts most to rolling is the front input tube. I've rolled all the other tubes including the rectifier, but it's the input tube which I've found to have the most impact.

I've also found that using NOS, rather then newer tubes produces the best outcomes in my set up. I really like RCA 5Y3 rectifiers, and Amperex 6922's(both white and orange print) in my CSP2.

Samb, can you recommend a front input tube?

I've had excellent results with Amperex 6922's, both white and orange label. Presently using a Mullard CV2492 gold pin, also a very nice tube.

Also using a Russian Winged "C" 5U4G rectifier presently. Very airy, but with decent bass slam. From the early 50's, tough tube, worth seeking out.
