Left Side Oscillation
02/22/16 at 16:45:29

I am experiencing a stubborn oscillation on the left side of the amp. It is a click click click sound clearly audible close to the speaker and even from a sitting position somewhat.  I tried changing all the tubes from the right side of the amp to the left and the sound persists. When the tubes that were on the left are placed on the right there is no oscillation on the right. I tweaked the connections. What else should I look for?

Is the click sound independent of volume?

The volume has no effect on the sound.

I asked because I've been having a left channel issue with my ZMA.  It's been as bad as a constant really loud noise with the meters pegged at the top to a slight popping or crackling.  When this later happens the meters just jump, and together.  Lately it's been fine.  Steve thought it was a tube issue and that I fried the left output tubes when the meters pegged but they seem to be fine after all.  I even had the popping with different output tubes altogether.  I have no clue what's going on or if it's a real problem or some transient ghost.  But whatever it is, I think it's in the amp and not the tubes.

I'm afraid it is the amp with this issue, too.

Rivieraranch,

I've been corresponding with Steve over my popping issue and he suggested that one of the input tubes must be funky.  Low and behold, when I swapped input tubes the noise switched to the right channel.  I think I was thrown off by looking at the output meters and thinking that it had to be an output tube, if a tube at all.

So, good news other than I need to get a new pair, at least.  Maybe yours is the same problem?

I already swapped the input with another tube and the oscillation persists.

Darn.  Well hopefully it's not the amp.  Steve was confident that my trouble was not in the amp and although I doubted him, fortunately, he was right.   I don't know if you've reached out to him yet but I did send him this Forum link.

Good news!

I'm trying to track down the exact tube causing the noise in my system and now I can't get it to make noise!

I have been trying to use different inputs for the MK IV. Now the oscillation returned. The Japanese Westinghouse 6922 oscillates in the left input position. The tube that does not oscillate in the left side is the JJ ECC88. I have several other alternatives but when I try them they all oscillate in the left channel. I am wondering it if is something with the pins making proper contact.Who knows. It might be something in the left side amp that is finicky about what tubes.

Now I just discovered that this oscillation was caused by my router, which was positioned close to the speaker on the left side.
How did I arrive at this? I was reading the owners manual for the Zen UFO and noted something about router. Then right before I fell asleep last night it occurred to me that I should take a look at this. Once I woke this morning I turned the Torii on and pulled the power cord from the router and voila! the speaker was completely quiet. Mystery solved

Thank you so much for posting this!!!
I had the same issue lately and thought it may be the power supply, but also turned out I put a new router into my rack too close to the Torii, moved a way a bit and the oscillation stopped!
