hum in zp 2.0, output interconnect for zp 2.0?
09/15/15 at 03:35:06

hello,

i have been running a zp 2.0 phono stage to my csp preamp for many years. i recently got a new set of speakers and noticed a significant hum from the zp 2.0.

because this hum changes as either the gain on the csp is adjusted or the main volume control on my se84cs is adjused, i believe this is not a ground loop issue.

i have a furutech phono cable that leads from my tonearm to my phono stage, and i have a set of unshielded decware interconnects from the phono stage to the preamp.

i noticed that the owner's manual for the zp 2.0 recommends a shielded interconnect for both input and output of the zp 2.0.

could my unshielded decware intercoonect be the cause of my hum? if so, would the decware shielded interconnects be a good solution?

thank you,

james

The only change was the new speakers?  Are they much more efficient that what they replaced?

I have a ZP3 into a CSP3 and I have a hum but not really bothersome.  I have found that it has resisted any change in interconnect, ZP3 tubes or TT or cart.  Steve told me that hum can be caused by a slight incompatibility between the cartridge or tonearm wiring and the phono stage.  But if none of that changed for you then ???  If you put your original speakers back in does the hum go away?

Another question would be does the new speaker have a powered subwoofer or was a sub added in the change over?
Powered subs have caused me the most hum issues.

Hello,

I switched from Klipsh Heresy to Omega Super AlNico Monitors. They have similar sensitivities. I don't have any subwoofers in the system.

I did change the tubes in the ZP 2.0, but the hum persists with the new tubes.

Have you tried puting the Heresys back in to see if the hum goes away?  Could the new speakers have a flaw in them somewhere?  I just don't see why changing speakers should cause a hum.

Hi Archie,
After a bit more investigation, I concluded that the new speakers made audible a previously unnoticed hum from the phono front end. Hum was not coming from the turntable motor. The hum was coming from somewhere between cartridge and my CSP. I couldn't isolate the source any more than this .. .  I unplugged all the cables in this stretch of system. After plugging everything back in, the hum disappeared!!

So . . I'm not sure if there was loose connection somewhere or if i adjusted a cable to reduce radio interference, but the system is sounding very good!
Thanks,
james

Gotta love those ghost hums!  I like your idea of a bad connection or cable position.  Hopefully it stays gone!

I noticed a hum from my ZMA when I went to the Decware Silver ICs.  It's not an issue but it wasn't there with different ICs.  I get a laugh when I listen to recordings and hear amplifier hum from the band.  It's always something!   Cheesy
