Time for a Build HDT questions
01/18/15 at 03:48:36

Fixing to put together 2 pairs of HDT's one for me one for a friend.
I have already built a wicked one for those of you that havent
built one I suggest you do if you can, it is one nice cabinet for subs.

From what I can tell off the HDT down loadable  plans and reading some of the forum posts is the placement of the speaker the inside oval ports and the passives are all set to 9 inches off the top of the cabinet to the centers.
The rubber bumpers for the top removable lid is 3/8 tall.
Please forgive my ignorance but why is that lid removable?
I have to be missing something on that .

Also I was going to use the eggcrate mattress topper from walmart for the sound dampening would there be a
difference between that and acoustic eggcrate ?
And for the rest of the cabinet I was going to use
dyna mat would this be over kill ?
On the ovals we use a drill but around the hole for the port is this so the jagged edge will break up the standing waves or
keep the port from chuffing?
I have also noticed the use of fasteners is
a Big no no . I think I read it was because the fasteners attenuate
differently than the wood but the different wood will also do the same thing mdf verses plywood verses particle board, even different types of glues.
When I say a fastener I mean a nail from a finish gun. Using the appropriate fastener in the right place till glue dries would that really affect the tuning of the box ? I wonder because with all the dampening that is being placed in the box would not  the tuning be with the ports and the passives ?   Again please forgive my ignorance I do not know
just asking after all knowledge is power.
I have all the pieces cut out the edges of the cabinet are going to be
zebra wood with the main body of cabinet being maple.
JUst fixing to to start cutting all the ports and hole saw for the pvc ports.
Thanks for any responses .
ZYGI any toughts. Smiley

Yes, all mentioned are 9" down from the top of the cabinet...that would put the inside ovas down 8-1/4" from the top of their respective pieces.

I wouldn't say the use of fasteners is taboo, I use them all the time! However the use of fasteners along the front and back side joint (where the sides meet the fronts) wouldn't be good if you were to use the 3/4" round over I'd recommended on the four corners.

The use of fasteners top bottom and the like is fine.

Rubber bumpers don't make good fasteners....No the rubber bumpers help to damp out resonances, attaching the top would negate that.

You're better off with acoustic egg crate  foam..

Happy building.
