Shouldn't have done it but I bought another bass, a "wishbass" from luthier Steve Wishnevsky. Got it from ebay for 100 dollars, and it uses an Alumitone pickup that costs 90 bucks, so it was a steal in so many ways. A bit rough in the finish department but plays like butter. Lined fretless neck, and has a hollow body with a center piece of wood so little feedback. As with all wishbasses (I have another, a solid body fretless with I kid you not a neck like a contrabass violin) the sound is in the fingers. . . one pickup and one volume control only so you have to work it. That said this plays very easily and you can get all the Jaco sounds one might want (personally I shy away from them) and also can get contrabass violin sounds (my target). A bargain.

Thanks for posting that about the Dylan sculptures. I had read about these a few years ago but forgotten about them. That man fascinates me.

And yes, this bass sounds really good, that Alumintone pickup is well-placed and meaty, and the neck is surprisingly easy to play. I've wanted a hollow bodied fretless bass and this one does nicely, and no one else bid on it so 100 plus 25 shipping is an incredible price. Still playing around with the action and intonation a bit but put through my '63 Fender Reverb head reissue with just a little bit of mix and dwell it has a great resonant sound to it. Might sound thin with a small amp, but I have that Fender Bassman TV Fifteen which is 300 class D watts with a 12AX7 in the preamp, and I also have been running a Glass Damage two tube pre-amp/multi-effect (mostly set to bypass) . . . no thinness there.

Wishnevsky is now making guitars as a take off of J.J. Cale's old Harmony (back off the hollow body to avoid uncontrolled feedback) with Alumitone pickups. . . I bet these are really good. I missed out on one on ebay that went for 125. . . I was on the road when it went into the final minutes, away from my computer. I read that his factory had a fire so he may be slow to make new ones. But I'm patient. . . have plenty of other guitars to play. But. . . I want one.

Man, I thought BB was immortal. I too was fortunate to see him live several times...first in the 80's in Omaha, NE, then several times in the 90's at an annual Blues Festival in Dallas. But the last and most memorable was in the summer of 2004 at Clapton's first Crossroads Guitar Festival. I'll miss you BB. Mark.

Commanded an audience the way only one other person I've ever seen did, Stevie Wonder (though Stevie's audience was about fifty times bigger!) He had a full career and a full life.
