Torii MK III "hot" transformers??

Hi.

How hot does your power transformers get (the two in the middle behind regulator tubes)?

I can baerly touch mine for 1 sec. without burning myself... Is this normal?

I have been having bass issues with my MK III, and in my experimenting I noticed the right channel transformers were getting warmer than the left.  I had just put in some new output tubes and Steve said it was due to the tubes pulling more power on the right channel so for now I will attribute it to a tube issue until I can sort out my bass issue.  However, they were just warmer, not too hot to touch.

My output transformers are only warm, but the power transformers are really hot. I would guess 70-80 degrees celsius. Both channels are the same.

Have you checked your actual house voltage?
How does it compare to the transformer rated voltage?

The voltage in the house is a bit low at 225V, (well within spec of the transformers) but I've also checked at 240V with a online UPS.

The temperature is the same no matter what.

I had my Torii on for about 6 hours yesterday, still fussing with my bass issue, and all the transformers were barely warm, both power and output.

Did some measurements today, and here is what I got. Not exactly 70-80°C, but still pretty hot at 65°C after 4 hours.

Startup:   23°C
30 min:    40°C
1 hours:   50°C
2 hours:   60°C
4 hours:   65°C

Output transformers are at around 40°C after 4 hours.

My Torii mk III uses around 180W of power from the outlet.

Edit: After 5 hours it looks stable at around 68°C.

Hi McKajVah and all on this topic.

I run two Torii Mk III stereo amps in "vertical", active bi-amp configuration into my Analysis Audio "Epsilon" full ribbon ls. via a Marchand active crossover.

Each loudspeaker is fed by its own Torii III stereo amp: The left channel of the stereo amp drives the bass ribbon, the right channel the treble ribbon.

The amps were reworked and calibrated for this active application by a specialised workshop in Germany, to ensure an electro-technical/electro-acoustical "equality" of the two amps.

The four power transformers, two on each amp, get equally very hot; like in your case, uncomfortably to touch.

Since the Torii Mk III run in class A1, the power transformers suck the full 180 W from your wall socket, regardless how loud the volume is set.

Why the "hotness" of the power transfomrers on the Torii Mk III occurs, is bejond my technical knowledge. I would myself like to know why this is so.

I would very much appreciate if someone could give us a proficient technical explanation for this phenomena on this amplifier.
