Transformer upgrade
07/14/13 at 18:26:42

Currently working on my first speaker build, using HES. Therefor, plan for next project is to build the ZKIT1 .

As using the Edcore transformers will require me to spend quite a bit on P&P, I'd like to replace/upgrade the Edcore transformers to parts that are more easily available in Europe. 1 on 1 replacement would be easiest, but I haven't been able to find transformers with exactly the same specs.

Could someone tell me, what are the most critical specs for the input and output transformers in relation to the ZKIT1?

Help most appreciated.

Wish I could help but unfortunately I am not versed in this area. Best of luck!

Have you tried an email to Sarah and Steve?

I recconned Steve would read this post too.

I do understand the fundamentals of a transformer, but am new to transformers used in tube amplifiers.

I´m not asking for the ultimate transformer specs. Just looking for a replacement/upgrade transformer that will work without blowing up/burning/frying the amp

I reccon the following applies when looking for replacement for the Edcor output transformer

1. Turn ratio should be the same or higher
2. Primary impedance should be the same or higher
3. Secondary impendance should be the same or lower
4. Power capabilty should be the same or higher

Please advise.

I wouldn't take for granted that Steve will see this thread. I'd email him and Sarah.

Sent Sarah an e-mail earlier this week (couldn't find Steve's and can't yet send him PM). Unfortunately, to date no reply. Sad.

Is there any literature one could recommend on this subject?

Please advise.

Zen@decware.com will reach Steve, though a phone call is the best way to reach him.

Sarah just had a baby, so she may not be working. Try Devon, dev@decware.com

But again, calling is usually the best way to reach Steve or Devon.

Hi

this link may help...

Where in Europe do you live?

Hi mboxler,

thanks for the link, interesting reading.

I'm from the Netherlands. Could you tell me, if there is an electronics supplier in Europe, similar to Parts Express and Mouser? Although Decware did a great job on putting togetter the BOM, I'd be spending a small fortune on shipping from the US for parts that are probably also available in Europe.  :)

I stumbled upon this one.

http://www.tme.eu/en/

It's in Poland.  Not sure if it would be any cheaper, though.

Gook luck!
