June Christy "Ballads for Night People" Capitol cd

I'm not one of those night people, haven't been so long I don't remember being one. . . but I do love these ballad performances.

June Christy – vocals
Bob Cooper – arranger, conductor, tenor saxophone
Frank Rosolino – trombone
Bud Shank – alto saxophone, flute
Buddy Collette – clarinet
Chuck Gentry – bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet
Joe Castro – piano
Red Callender – bass
Mel Lewis – drums
Stan Levey – drums
Kathryn Julye – harp
Jim Decker – French horn
Norman Benno – English horn, bassoon
Recorded Los Angeles, 27 August and 10 September 1959.

(This cd also contains five tracks from "Do-Re-Mi")

Another interesting singer with interesting arrangements, Anita O'Day with the Gary McFarland Orchestra.

This is the Verve Master Edition, and it sounds better to me with "Phase" OUT on my DAC rather than IN. This material sounds better on the Mosaic of O'Day's Verve work, but that wasn't on a shelf right next to me. . . .

O'Day grew on me, I really love the sound of her voice and I grew to identify and enjoy her unique phrasing.

Anita O'Day with the Gary McFarland Orchestra "All the Sad Young Men" Verve cd

Anita O'Day – vocals
Bernie Glow, Herb Pomeroy, Doc Severinsen – trumpet
Bob Brookmeyer, Willie Dennis – trombone
Phil Woods, Walter Levinsky – clarinet, alto saxophone
Zoot Sims – tenor saxophone, woodwind
Hank Jones – piano
Barry Galbraith – guitar
George Duvivier – double bass
Mel Lewis – drums
Gary McFarland – arranger, conductor

I love Mark Shim, but I only have that one album and "Mind Over Matter."
I know he appears on a few more, according to Discogs, but I have yet to find them available.

Great music!  Thanks for posting.

Yes, he really just has two albums as a leader, and then a co-leader of "New Directions" on Blue Note, which is a good one.

I have him as a sideman on a Delfayo Marsalis album and I think that's it in my holdings other than the three Blue Note appearances.

Holy Cow. . . these XRCD24 from Audio Wave can really show you what condition your system is in. This is a fine recording from Rudy Van Gelder to begin with, the mastering is great and the sound is just right. Not to mention that this quintet means business.

Donald Byrd "The Cat Walk" Blue Note Audio Wave XRCD24.

Hearing the version of "Cute" on the Byrd-Adams made me reach for a Basie recording. And I saw this Big Joe Turner disc and decided that it should spin.

Hey, Lon, you probably have no idea how many times I see something you just got or just posted and I preview it on Tidal or Hell, I have Spotify on my TV rig thanks to my daughter.
I go looking for it so "I can be cool too!" Frustration ensues.

Then all I can find is a Redbook version or an LP from the '80s or some such.

Like the XRCD24 for instance from Donald Byrd,  "The Cat Walk"  seems to be elsewhere from where I need to look.

I also understand that many of these postings you mention were short runs and you've had them for ages.

I know it's a LARGE ask, but some you have recently acquired shown with an added source, rather than track information or collaborating band members would be amazing.

I tip my hat to your shopping aplomb, but would love a tip back of source once in a while.
You do a great service, either way! I can only thank you and cry like a baby sometimes.

Thanks, but do not misinterpret.
I was talking about items you just acquired and know exactly where they came from.

Nothing more.

Never ever was I trying to get you to do my shopping for me.
Sorry for not being more clear with that.

Your collection is enviable upon many levels. I only ask for a heads up for brand new acquistions occasssionally.

Thanks for all those links!

Peace, Bro!

Yeah. I'm sorry. I am not feeling 100 percent this year and I'm not the happiest I have been and I just want to escape the world and asks from persons are things I generally try to escape from these days.

Here are some important resources for things that I post about:

www.discogs.com
www. amazon.com
www.dustygroove.com
www.mosaicrecords.com
www.ebay.com
www.cdjapan.co.jp

I'm disc only so these are sources for new and used discs. You have the streaming situation covered I think--that's something that has not interested me and when I've heard it in systems I was not as impressed with the sound.

From a song I love:

"they'll never know me, and I'll never be what they want me to be .... but l'm still here."

Thanks, Lon for any guidance you can offer.

Bless you in this time of angst and get better soon!

I regret bringing up something that has worsened your time through this.

By contrast, I am mostly healed from my latest injuries and enjoying everything I can.

Hope the same for you.

I'm glad you have been healing nicely. It might be better if my ills were physical. I'll be better in time. I'm still healing from grief over my father. He was my "mission" for nine years, half the big reason that I gave up a life I loved in Austin and moved here, and I feel "mission-less" now. More and more I realize what an amazing person and resource he was, and I miss him and his wisdom and guidance.

And my wife is going through real work awfulness and I'm not really able to help her and it's throwing a lot of our home life a big whack that I know will improve in time.

There are other things concerning me I won't mention here. Wink

As the song says "Things Got to Get Better in a Little While."

This arrived from ebay (not very well packed darn it) this week, I missed this when it was first released many years ago and I'm glad I finally corralled it:

The one and only Basie with Zoot, a great swinging combo.

Nearly 20 years ago I was fortunate to be able to buy Japanese discs from a fellow who was able to buy them at auction in lots and offered me some for sale. At that time I bought the four of the Miles Davis Quintet Prestige releases on a special run of LP facsimile XRCD discs and I confess that not only are these so cool to handle but they sound excellent--this is how I listen to the for "In'" albums when I do.

Today it's "Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" Prestige/JVC XRCD in LP facsimile sleeve.

AHMAD JAMAL "EMERALD CITY NIGHTS - Live at the Penthouse 1963-1964" Elemental Music 2 cd set, disc 1

One of two sets (the other presenting live sets from 1961 and 1962) from Elemental releasing Jamal's trio in great (mono) sound. Jamal's playing just grabs my attention and I hold on for a great musical ride.

My phono preamp has been playing hide and seek with me. Twice now in the last six weeks it has gone dark. . . and nothing I do revives it. Then a number of days later . . . it is back on and ready to roll for a few weeks. It came back on today so I'm spinning a few records, and they sound glorious.

First is Duke Ellington "Jazz Party" mono copy, the cymbals and Jimmy Rushing's voice and Dizzy's trumpet sound out just so right.

Followed by
Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette "Standards, Vol. 1" --the start of the Standards Trio.

Wow this came in the mail from Belgium via discogs.com and it is as nice as I thought it would be.

A DVD and cd set and I haven't watched the DVD but the cd is excellent--a recording from June 24 & July 1, 1965, at The Penthouse, Seattle, WA. With Sadao Watanabe, Gabor Szabo, Eddie Gomez, Joe Cucozzo and McFarland on vibes that is as good as I had hoped it would be. (There's an LP out but it has less material).

One of my favorite rock albums of fifty years ago has been given a RADICAL remix. Sounds great, but it's almost a different album, which is also not a bad thing!

There's a contemporary live redo of the album by Bob and new bandmates on disc 2 that I have not gotten to yet.

Bob Weir "Ace" 50th Anniversary 2 cd set, disc 1.

Playing this one again. When I first switched over from a Simmons drum kit to a Sonor kit in the last band I was in I played and tried to practice to "God Bless the Child" on cassette over and over. . . taught me a little somethin' somethin'. . . .

This is one of my "Go To" albums when I just want a warm LP experience or as I am doing now, a test album.
I've played this on and off most of the day and some last night, both with and without my dipole subwoofer system on or off.

I bought this the week it came out so I have an early run copy.
Bought the Redbook later, but this is the one I chose to digitize for my hard drives.

Perhaps an appropriately named June Christy album. (I'm actually listening to this on cd, the second half of the two-LPs-on-one-cd that is the Capitol cd "The Song is June.")

Count Basie "The Golden Years" disc 2 (of 4)
Pablo box set

I used to think later Basie was somewhat inferior. Silly man. I could not have been more wrong, as I have been discovering this decade.

I saw Ahmad Jamal perform a few years ago, and I think he was 90 years old at the time. He followed the other performers on the stage, and he walked slowly to the piano. I wondered if he would make it. Once he started playing, he changed. Quick, light, coordinated movements that produced beautiful music. His first album was at the age of 19. What a career.

What a career indeed! My parents had a few of his LPs so I've been listening to him all my conscious life!

Right now
I need the boost that comes from Slim Gaillard's competent silliness. A bonafide master musician . . .and natural entertainer. I never tire of his music.

Re-listening to this remixed cd, a very different mix than the original. I can like them both and I do, but boy is this mix different.

This just came in from amazon. It completes my collection of all 25 of the AudioWave XRCD24 Blue Note titles.

Now I can work on finishing off my Japanese RVG editions of Blue Note titles. Only need about 40. . . but it may take the rest of my life--a lot of these are expensive.

Freddie Hubbard "Open Sesame" Blue Note/Audio Wave XRCD24

A great session. I should be ashamed to admit I have three other versions. They all sound good.
