Antonio Carlos Jobim "Songbook Instrumentals" 2 cd set

I've been looking for a reasonably priced copy of this for some time (I have a CDR copy) and finally did at Dusty Groove. Great set for Jobim fans.

Some quiet music as the rest of the house sleeps.

"The Complete Master Jazz Piano Series" Mosaic Records, cd III.

I like this set and this is perhaps my favorite disc, featuring Jay McShann, Teddy Wilson and Cliff Smalls.

Followed by

Keith Jarrett "The Bordeaux Concert" ECM

This seems to be one of the better recordings I own.
I mean, I would listen to most attempt Paganini anyway for a while, but this one works well.

Sad to think that most everyone who made this album are dead.
Not dead today. It's spinning!

Sorry for the shit pic. Just tried to phone capture with sunlight coming in the window.

Listening to something very familiar as I made a change to the DAC--added a specially designed plug for the USB input that has removed another veil of noise. It's amazing how "noise"--so much more in our environment than decades ago--is something that when incrementally removed creates sonic improvment. And it seems there is always more noise to be eliminated.

Belief of fully understanding the thoughts behind the album name (after 100 hours burn-in of the new speaker wire), the single best word to describe the take away is presence.

Lon, how coincidental! Listening to Dragonfly it was noticed that the bass had a slight flabby sound. Wondering, the thought came that the holes in the back of the speakers after removal of the terminals are still open. I got up and plugged the four holes with bolts and washers. Can't say it improved things but surely did not hurt. Could be that the wires just need more burn-in time.

Seems there is always an improvement waiting to be discovered. . . .

On to

Joe Lovano / Greg Osby "Friendly Fire" Blue Note cd

Haven't played this one in a few years, and whenever I revisit something after that long I notice how much better it sounds because the system sounds so good now.

What a band. I forgot how good Cameron Brown can be on bass, and Jason Moran and Idris Muhammed bring a lot.

Monday Michiru "Nexus"

This woman has so much going for her. Her lyrics are straight-forward yet have a wide scope of adult experience and have insight and positive statements.

And her music composition and synthesis and fusion is organized and interesting even when there's more "house" and other elements I'm not crazy about there's plenty to listen for and enjoy. She's a capable arranger and band-leader and hires intelligently. Her voice is a thread that weaves so much together.

This is one of her mature, reflective, yet joyful releases. Sound is quite good.

I'm a big Randy Weston fan and have decided to begin revisiting his earliest recordings which are great listens.

This one first: "The Modern Art of Jazz," released on Dawn Records.

Recorded in New York City on November 21 and November 22, 1956

Randy Weston - piano
Ray Copeland - trumpet
Cecil Payne - alto saxophone, baritone saxophone
Ahmed Abdul-Malik - bass
Wilbert Hogan or Willie Jones - drums

More Peggy Lee sides with the excellent guitar styling of her then husband Dave Barbour. Great singing and playing and great mono sound, both in the original recording and the mastering for cd.

I tend to despise or at least barely tolerate scatting, but I think I would listen to Ella for any reason at all.
Grin

I've spun some Boston today and moving toward some more jazzy feel for the moment. Oh, BTW, there is nothing down low on these early Boston recordings, except for some rare keyboard accents. I can hear them with these new drivers, but the accents do not shake the floor as intended.

"Filles de Kilimanjaro" is going to be next after a bit of Man Work to help out with decorating for the season.

Women come up with these magnificient ideas and try often to be self sufficient, but once the cursing of hammers and gluey things begins, I gently step in and analyze the entire issue. It is usually something too heavy hung by something too small.

Her: "I don't want a hole there!"   Me: "Do you want this four pound wreath that you have added twelve pounds of beauty to to stick to the wall? You know I can fix holes."   Her: "I thought it would just hang there."   Me: "And it will. Let me show you how this can work."  Me: Gets out anchors, awl, measuring tape, big screws, drill, level and probably even more tools. It will be there for years if need be.
Then, when the enthusiasm to "de-endecorate" exceeds the original enthusiasm to decorate, I can fix the hole.
Smiley

But, I have also had to work hard to be the Hero Of The Day in the past just getting through the current quantity of quality expected.

Just listened to a disc from David Bowie's "Conversation Piece" to prepare myself for a spin this week through the new David Bowie archival release "Divine Sympathy" that arrived yesterday.

The system sounds amazing today. I have to keep telling myself "don't change a thing."

Jose James "Yesterday I had the Blues: the Music of Billie Holiday" Blue Note Japan SHM-CD (2022 reissue)

This is one of those rare releases that I didn't think I would fall in love with when it was first released but I did and I still think it's both a great slab of music and a great recording.

This is how you make a tribute album.

I'm going through this composite Sarah Vaughn collection. But that's only the start.
I know a Ken Burns selection is not the way to go with the best of this music, but finding them at a "fire sale" I grabbed up all twelve for a buck a pop.

I've gone shopping, but not for anyone else but me. There's an old record store about to be destroyed half way to downtown Indy. I've been there many times over the years.

I always buy several things, but today, knowing what has happened to the community, I stopped in to see if anything was left I might want. It's a decent long drive and I went there today on purpose after some local news about the upcoming Indy city project.

My GOD! It was a treasure trove! And priced to go right now!

There was a Columbia Jazz collection for $30 and it seems to be complete (all 25 discs) and so much more. Collections were a bit more than a buck a pop. I'll tag it below, too.
I dropped over $600 bucks and increased the "interesting" level of my collection by a large margin. (EDIT: I just pulled out my receipt - I spent $678, including tax)

I came home with 350 something CDs by counting the collections and stacks of CDs and over two hundred LPs priced at a buck or two a pop. I was there for a long time, most of the afternoon.

I hate to see the store go, but the city is taking the land. (Kind of like what happened to our old house)
They've already torn down the beautiful old high school, just down the street which was built strong in the '30s, but no air conditioning, so bye bye!

So many small shops all on the chopping block. It is a part of the art community in the area and Covid did away with most of the small "artisan shops" and businesses in the area, but even the last of the hold outs can no longer stay.

I just hope that the tiny pittance I was able to drop for the owners helps a little. I will enjoy my bounty, but it is sad to see them go. I would love to be able to go back and spend a few grand. There are so many more desirable items there!
... and it's probably all going to an auction, soon.

Cry Cry Cry

Just this Columbia Collection alone is amazing.

It was meant to be a kind of introductory for some who are looking into jazz with only wetting one toe or something. Variety!

I have better "KOB" versions, but it includes a few more albums that I did not yet have.
I know, I'm late to the table, as is usual.
I looked up an Amazon version of this same collection and "used" like this one are offered at around $80, so it still feels like a bargain to me.
So much more!

Columbia had many great jazz artists over the years so it's not surprising their collections would contain excellent material. Wink

I snuck in a comparison between the US cd version and the Japanese UHQCD version of Jose James' "Yesterday I had the Blues." The Japanese copy surprised me as being better--more depth to the sound field, a slightly warmer sound (which if this is a result of EQ is the opposite of what usually happens with Japanese EQ changes). Possibly the UHQCD aspect does improve sound a bit.

Honestly, I'm not listening much!
My wife is making confectionery magic happen right now. Every year she makes this mountain of candy for family gifts, with some benefit to the local wildlife with which she resides.
She put some Christmas music on the TV. YUCK!! Klipsch system; sounds fine for movies but wreaks for music.

SO, I rewired some stuff and I found her Kenny G, Barbra Streisand, Oak Ridge Boys, Partridge Family, and Doris Day Christmas CDs, chucked them up solidly into my old '80s era five disc Sony changer which has never missed a beat in almost forty years, BTW, set them on shuffle and left the building.
Grin

Wow, these F15s even make the Partridge Family sound pretty good. Who knew?
Hero husband signing off.

Cootie Williams "1945-1946" Chronogical Classics cd

Picked this up last month--haven't heard most of this ever before. It's rougher around the edges than the Ellington Orchestra and a bit more R&Bish. I'm digging it.

Miles Davis "Seven Steps to Heaven" Sony SBM mastered lp facsimile cd.

It's interesting how well these 20 bit remastered cds that I bought years and years ago of Miles Davis albums I love have held up sonically. When I revisit them I notice how great they sound. . . and then I disappear into the familiar, almost "cherished" music.

On to another Miles Davis, "E.S.P." this time a Mobile Fidelity SACD edition.

One of the first "Second Great Quintet" releases I ever bought, way back when on a reissue LP. It remains one of the cornerstones of my listening world.

I listen to a lot of music. I don't just listen to 'great sounding music' so when I do put on a disc that is a killer mastering of a release that was originally well-recorded it sometimes shocks me how well the system makes it shine.

This is one of those, this morning.

Santana "Caravanserai" Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD

My order for the Japanese 7" SACD version is on the way from Japan so it was time to revisit this one.

Love this music.
