Grateful Dead "Workingman's Dead"


The 50th Anniversary edition of this album arrived today, out today. I listened this morning to the Mobile Fidelity SACD which to me on my system sounds fantastic. Then the new version arrived (3 cd, 2 of which are a live show mixed from 16 track from '71) and I listened to this version of the album. It sounds very good darker and thicker sounding than the SACD. If you have the SACD and don't need the live show one can comfortably stick with the SACD. Except. . . man the lenticular slipcase cover on this is OUTSTANDING. Really a trip!

And this album has a cynically hopeful statement so ripe for this time: "One way or another this darkness got to give."

Thomas Bell and the Contemporary Jazz Quartet "Another Dimension" Atlantic/Warner CD Japan



One of the first LPs I ever owned was the mono copy of the original release of this LP. A Peace Corps volunteer my father directed gave this to me, as part of a box of records Atlantic gave to each volunteer, and he didn't like jazz so he gave me three of the records from the box. This was one of them. A part of the start of my jazz journey (my parents had some swing records and some Brubeck and Ellington from the 'fifties).

Mostly Other People Do the Killing "Kind of Blue"

I found a Japanese copy of this early two cd set for a great price. . . and I spent a bit of time comparing the American version to it. . . and both are quite nice, the American a little darker, the Japanese a little airier. . . .

I love this music. I love Gershwin (a love my father's passion for the music instilled in me) and I like how this "Almanac" differs from other "Songbooks" in arrangements and ensemble variety and the unique nature of Connor's interpretative singing. Just gets to me. . . in part because her voice also reminds me in timbre of the voice of someone I love very very much (the "one that got away.")

First, an old favorite, bought the LP about '75 or so and still have it, still plays nice and quiet.

I love "My People," ever since I saw the selections the Orchestra performed on the Bel Telephone Hour (Canada) show. I've four cd versions. .. but this mono LP on Contact sounds the very best, just big and bold and present.

Oh, I have started using the ADC in my PS Audio NuWave phono converter to change the analog signal to DSD and route it via HDMI/I2S to the DSD DAC. I thought this would not sound as good as the balanced analog out from the converter that I had been sending to the ZTPRE, but actually because I think the analog output of the DSD DAC is more refined than the NuWave's, and because the cabling is a little better from the DAC, the sound has been upped a notch. The DAC has two HDMI inputs so I can use the DMP and the NuWave both with the DAC. The sound is quite good. This NuWave was a good product, and I've really enjoyed it. Frankly I like that I don't wonder what tubes to use in it as I did all the time with the ZP3--it has one good signature sound. My Rega RP3 with all the Groovetracer upgrades and the Rega speed controller, white belt and Elys2 cartridge is also a good source, and using Iso-Pods and a PS Audio PowerBase gives it excellent isolation. I'm good for vinyl playback into the future.

Day 3 of my quarantine getaway down on the bay at the jersey shore.   Here is my view...





Decided to do some guitar listening and opted for Tony Mottola, Johnny Smith, and Al Caiola.

Spun some LPs today.

First up one of my favorite Santana LPs, “Borboletta.” I really like how Santana had assimilated and collated things he learned from playing with McLaughlin (the way I hear it using power tube distortion and feedback sustain in a new way } and  I confess the Chinmoy inspired lyrics appealed to me when this was first out on LP and still does.



Then “Friday Night at the Blackhawk” Miles Davis. .. this is from a 2 LP Columbia Special Products release. I have this material in many forms and like playing this 2 LP set.



Then on to Bob Dylan “Shadows in the Night” on LP. This is actually my least favorite of the Dylan “Standards” albums, I don’t think he quite had his vocal approach down pat yet, but I really do like the arrangements and playing.

Then on to a cd, the new Blue Note, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Just Coolin’” . . . not the best thing the label ever held back, but nice to have. Sure sounds good on cd. People are complaining about the packaging but I like it.

Started off listening today with a cd, Stan Getz "Quartet, Live in 1960, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf and Zurich." This has great playing and quite good mono sound.



Then I moved to LPs. First James P Johnson solo piano sides from this release, "The Complete Edmond Hall/James P. Johnson/Sidney De Paris/Vic Dickenson Blue Note Sessions" from Mosaic Records.



Then "Spotlight on Eddie Condon and his Allstars"


Then a Savoy LP of Eddie Bert's, "Kaleidoscope"


Then back to cd for the lovely Myriam Alder "If"

Holy cow, I love this album and boy does it sound great.
