Randy Weston, "Blue Moses" CTI Supreme Series Blu-Spec cd from Japan.

This apparently was not a session Randy wanted to make this way (with electric piano) but I've always loved it, for decades on LP and then several cd versions.

Listening to it on the latest configuration of my bedroom system: ZLC to Audiolab 600CDT to PS Audio NuWave DAC to CSP2+ with 25th anniversary mods to Oppo PM-1. Excellent sound!

That Ra looks cool--I pre-ordered a cd copy.

Right now. . .Philip Bailey's new one, "Love will Find a Way." It's what a friend and I call "stoner jazz" and there definitely is a "quiet storm" pop and R&B acid wash going on at times, but with some nice spacey arrangements and great players. I never quite heard the Marvin Gaye influence on Bailey's singing so strongly before, but that's not a bad thing at all.

Reissued this month, this Octave Records release of Erroll Garner, "Up in Erroll's Room," is perhaps my favorite. A huge piano sound, and . . . that amazing playing. Yes there is cheese. . .and ham, it's a record by one of the most extroverted pianists ever. But there's also chewy rye, and lots of mustard, and buttery lettuce. And the other two thirds of the trio do exactly the right things for the boss!

This is a fun session, recorded direct to two track. Bass drum could have been tamed a bit and piano could have been a bit more present, but Marty's three horns are well-presented and the violin sounds great on the tracks that it appears. Spirited playing.

"Big Band Basie" Count Basie, Pablo K2 cd.

I saw Basie about a year before this in a church. A wonderful show, even though I was distracted watching my late first wife on a date with someone else about four rows ahead on the other side of the sanctuary. . . .

This band has such PRECISION. And the sound is killer.

Before that these four masters of time, melody and mood. Great tunes!

Done a lot of listening to old favorites lately when home due to some component swapping and tube-rolling, and yesterday I didn't get much listening in as I was with my Dad all day.

Things are settled nicely and I'm listening today for pleasure! I started off with Antonio Carlos Jobim "Tide" which is a great Deodata-arranged session that I hadn't listened to in too long. . . .

Then I had a hankering for Ms Betty Carter, the dynamic bandleader and trail-blazing singer. This is one of her great Verve releases, "Droppin' Things" on Verve cd. There was no one like her!

Then I moved on to Miles Davis, "Miles Smiles," the 20 bit Sony LP facsimile cd reissue. . . . TONY!

And I'm listening now to a rare mother-daughter jazz release, Toshiko Akiyoshi and Monday Michiru "Jazz Conversations"

After two days with my in-laws I was hoping for a day of music to rest, but Lucinda decided to stay home from work, altering my plans. She's napping on the couch now so I was able to sneak upstairs and listen to a few discs on headphones (ZMF Ori) on the main system.

I started with Betty Carter, "Look at What I Got." I love Betty and this one has crept into my small group of favorites of hers. Great tunes, and I love the way she sings of romance, it seems to mirror my own joys when I find and have it, with an element of unexpected surprise thrown in that I always feel as well. She's less of a daredevil here, more the assured mistress of her art. I think she was one of the very best.

And then on to Tania Maria. Wow. I keep forgetting how much I love her work and what a talent she is. She may well be the world's best scat singer and vocalese artists as well as just plain one of the best singers. She can scat and play so wonderfully simultaneously, better than Benson or anyone else I have heard. And she can do the same with whistling, and I may have never heard a more supple and accurate musical whistler.

And she has such energy and personality in her compositions, interpretations and performances. I now pronounce her a genius. This is an excellent compilation of her work for World Pacific Records. Tania Maria, "The Best of Tania Maria"

Visited my Dad today. Had to answer questions about my travels and health and have my temperature taken just to get past the lobby of his assisted-living place. Sigh. It's going to be an interesting few years. . . .

Listened to two different piano trios today, both excellent, but very different.

First the David Hazeltine Trio "The Jobim Songbook in New York" Cheesy SACD.

Then Randy Weston Trio, "Piano a la Mode" Jubilee Records Japan cd.
