Amplifier for HW12
08/15/08 at 09:11:18

Hi,
I'm in the process of building my second HW12 but I would like some help in choosing a plate amplifier. I currently have 2 of these subs

Pioneer TS-W307D4
Design and Specifications
12” Dual Voice Coil (DVC) Subwoofer
for Enclosure applications
1,200 Watts Max. Power Handling
400 Watts Nominal Rating
Qts = 0.52
Xmax = 9.4mm
Fs = 34.8 Hz
Vas = 40.9 litres
Frequency Response : 18 ~ 500 Hz.
Efficiency : 89 dB
Impedance : 2 x 4 Ohm (Total 2 or 8 Ohms)
f0 (Lowest Resonant Frequency) : 34.8 Hz.
Recommended Sealed Enclosure : 24 ~ 49.6 Litres

Found here
http://www.ryda.com.au/Pioneer-TS-W307D4-12-Subwoofer-p/tsw307d4.htm

and am trying to decide which of these plate amplifiers to buy (they're both the same price)

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BRAND-NEW-350W-RMS-SUBWOOFER-AMPLIFIER-12MTH-WARRANTY_W0Q...

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BRAND-NEW-600W-RMS-SUBWOOFER-AMPLIFIER-12MTH-WARRANTY_W0Q...

The 350W is incredibly tempting due to it having a frequency responce of 20 - 160Hz, a THD of <0.1% and an SNR of >95dB... however it's only 350W and am unsure how it would perform with the two subs

The 600W is also tempting... due to it being 600W, the thing is the frequency responce is only 32 - 250Hz, THD is <0.5% and SNR is >80dB

Any suggestions ?  :-/

I'd go for the 350 watter, quality not quantity. See my Modded HWK article. The Luxman amp has very good specs but delivers about 140 watt bridged, which for me (mostly ht use) is massive.
Let us know what pans out.

I ended up finding a Dayton 1000W plate amplifier similar to this one

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-808

on ebay, only it's the 240v version (for AU), this probably has too much power for what I needed... but ah well... I feel sorry for the neighbours

The Reckhorn A-400 or A-401 is an excellent Amplifier great for Subwoofers. I use one for my own Sub. It has 400W and costs 230 Euros (The A-401). You won't find an amplifier with a better price-performance ratio. I would recommend also to use the Reckhorn F1 for 29 Euros. If you use two Subs you can control both of them independently with it. I can also recommend it for just one Sub.

The F-1

The A 401 is just a little newer than the A-400. If you wait for another month the A-402 will be out. The main difference is a finer volume or Filter control, and a larger High- /Low-cut filter range.

Plate amplifiers have a much worse quality for the same price. You can even attach the A-400 to the Subwoofer itself somehow. (I mean with glue and screws)

If you insist on a plate amplifier, forget the 600W, because if the speaker has 400W RMS this is the power you should use for it.

Just connect your Stereo to the A-401 through the speaker input (Or if you have a System with connectable Subwoofer; Subwoofer output with Low Input). With a cable, cinch on one side, normal on the other connect the A-401 with the F1: SUbwoofer Output with Input. T^hen with another cinch / normal cable you can connect two Subs to the F1.
It couldn't be simpler. It couldn't be more perfect!

With the A-400 you can also reverse the Phase ôf the speakers in case you use 4 Drivers in your House Wrecker.

Hey Spork! There's the new Reckhorn A-402, I buyed it and it's far better than the A-400. It only costs 250 Euros, it's incredible practical for Subwoofers and combinig it with the Reckhorn B1 for 60 euros really does it. I have two 400W Mivoc AWX 184 connected to it and it just sounds great!
