Thoughts on the Dayton 295-490

Anyone used the 295-490 Dayton DVC subs?

I am going to order 2 for my HWK12 unless I hear otherwise from you guys.

My HWK has been sitting in the shop for about a year now with no speakers in it because I was too cheap to buy subs and amp.  I came across a nice amp the other day so I want to load it up.

Cheesy

What Amp do you have?  Since you already own that, it would be nice to find its power specs in order to help you choose the best subwoofer.

Too many reports of problems with Daytons not getting  good results in the HWK to make it worth a try.

I'll just be powering them with an old Sony receiver for now.  It's a Sony gx900es I think.  I think it is 100-150 watts per channel, but I am sure in the real world that is peak wattage.

Music or HT Nathan?
Just curious, I may be one of those Dayton owners John was refering to.

I'm content with my housewrecker (after a real nice guy helped me mod it for HT use.  ??? )
But I may be one of those "nutbag fruitcake wierdo's" that doesn't know when enough bass is enough.

Using (2) of these these Daytons though....

Using 900 watts by the way.

I'll be using it for both music and HT.  It will be in the living area.
I just don't want to spend a fortune on speakers.  But, at the same time I love lots of low end, in everything.. music, movies, all of it.

At this point with the power I have to push them, which isn't much I think I am going to try the cheaper Daytons and see how they sound.  All in all, it has to sound better than the 10" powered sub I have now!  Plus Parts Express shows $39 on the 12s I am looking at, but I received a catalog in the mail that has them listed for around $30.

Nathan (am I correct, that's your first name?)

Good luck, keep us posted. Can't go wrong for $30. can always "play" with them in experimental enclosures if they don't work for a Housewrecker.
Plenty of reading material in the HWK forum on various members building, and modding a HWK.
I've got a few 'diaries' here where several members, ie.. smarter members, have held me by the hand during my HWK journey.

Steve has designed a nice box, I'm sure you'll be happy.

Yeppers, name is Nathan.

Yeah, I agree.. can't go wrong with $30 speakers.  They have to be better than what I have now (which is nada).  I built my HWK about a year and a half ago and it has been just sitting in the shop collecting dust, so I would rather get some cheapo speakers and use it.  After I first built it I loaded 2 JL Audio W6s in it and hooked it up to a Punch 700s I had in the car in the garage.  The W6s didn't work too well with the enclosure.  Don't get me wrong, it was loud but those JLs move so much air it sounded like a huge air pump with all the port noise.  It would have definately been overkill for the livingroom.

Got everything hooked up today to test this thing out.

WUUUURD UP!!!!

It sounds GREAT.  Even with the little amount of power and these $35 Dayton speakers it ROCKS!!  We cranked it and the wife and I walked down the block to see how far we could hear it.  It was quite a ways, so I bet the neighbors are going to LOVE us!!

So how did it work (the Dayton 295-490's)?????

I bought the same for a db 12 because they are cheap and seem to have good specs.  Maybe an HWK 12 instead if I hear good things from you.  Give us the scoop!

Sorry I haven't checked back in a while.  But I definately HAVE been enjoying my HWK.  This thing is so freakin awesome.

I ended up using the 295-490s that I picked up from Parts Express for $30 a piece.  I put them in the one facing down and one facing up configuration.

I have been more than pleased with what this enclosure has been doing.  It literally does it all.  It can play soft when we have background music or get flat out rowdy when the party is in full effect.  Watching movies has been plain AWESOME.  It's not just that it will get loud, we all know it can do that, but the quality of the low end is something I have personally never had.  This thing sounds great, even with the cheap drivers and little amount of power I am putting to them.  It will get alot louder than I need it to.

My verdict... if you are interested in great sound for very little money, don't hesitate to go with these cheaper drivers.  You will not be disappointed.
