.....Aircooled VW, now with pix! (2)10DB

I am looking to put a 2x10" DB in the back of my superbeetle.....

I have a space that is 36" wide but low,  max 15-16"
and not very deep either,  maybe 12-16"

I can easily fit 1 DB lying down sideways.... but i have 2x10" sony xplod subs already and would like to use both.

Should i just make 1 box and clamshell the subs or can i custom size the box and still get good results?

ted

clamshell if you really can't squeeze 2 dbs in
EDIT :
steve said in his book that it's good for the box to have room to breathe.
what's the mounting depth of your subs ? they need to be rather shallow to clamshell

i am thinking a double DB design  with the ports right next to each other and the sealed ends opposite each other.....

Only thing is that i need to shorten the overall length by about an inch to make it fit.........

will this mess up my tuneability?

and the sony xplod 10s i have are  almost 6" deep, clamshell wont fit

it'a a great idea. do you plan to remove the bottom lids on both the boxes, like having a common vented chamber ?
you can use only one bottom lid to save some space.
cutting off 1 inch won't hurt the box by much. you can add some polyfill to repair.

Here is the redesign i just did of the DBK10-II (after i bought the plans;))

oops....was't thinkin about that

I was thinking a shared vented chamber might cause problems, so i stuck with the original design and put the closed ends opposite each other.......

+1

Some good tinkerers could almost build one to spec using those pictures. Trust me.

Good luck though, and let us know how it turns out.

EDIT-Inverting the design, putting the sealed chambers sharing a common end, and the vents on opposite ends, would give you a more 'stereo' sound. Just a thought.

All's good, now we just gotta get 60 to pull those down. Undecided

Just didn't want toes gettin' stepped on. I doubt anyone's offended.

Given any thought to my above idea?

I am going to build my Double 10 DB this weekend.  i ended up with a design so that the ports are at the ends.   I will get some pics of the box,  i plan to "rhino" spray on coating for it or an equivalent.

Let you know how it goes and sounds  ;)

So i finally got the box together, with much clamping and a full sheet of 3/4" MDF..........   DAAAAAAAAMN, This thing absolutely SLAMS in the back of my bug!!!!  ;D (2) 10" in there with a center baffle and two adjustable inserts facing away from each other.

Here a couple pics, taped shut for testing and baffles taped in for now......

really nice.
i love seeing bolts instead of terminal cups. i had terminal cups on my first build...they leaked.

yeah..i couldnt see using terminal cups. too much pressure.  i used 1/4" brass bolts.

I still need to tune..... right now one is right behind the hald moon, the other covers it by 1/2".  Sounds WOW! i dunno how to tune properly.........

My plan right now is to cover it with rustoleum hammertone silver paint,  I am going to rubber mount isolate it from the floor of the car and put the amp underneath i think.

I am planning on a cargo area in front of the box where the seats used to be, so i might mount it concealed in there too.    and for effect i want to put a couple green LED's inside the lid of the box that pulse with the sub.

I need to sound deaded the back of the car first and foremost tho.

um, not really........i didnt want to step on any toes by puttin too much detail up.......  It is basically 2 10" deathboxes back to back with the removable end being the halfmoon end

to clamp the main box together we used 7 clamps tho........
