Wow, great 1.5 review at Pos Feedback!!

http://www.positive-feedback.com

(I tried to put the exact link in but evertime I tried it showed up very differently).  Just go to table of contents for Issue 17.  You'll see the review with the FirstWatt amp.

Guess he liked them. Smiley Smiley Smiley

I am a newbie here and a long-time VMPS owner.  I currently have the Rm/X's and am EXTREMELY intrigued by this review and other comments here.  The RM/X's have a VERY small sweetspot, but are quite revealing.

Are the RL 1.5's a newer design than the 3's?  In other words, is the round architecture going to be the future or is the pyramidal 3 shape just as enveloping.  I absolutely put imaging and soundstaging first in my priority list, but bass response and dynamics are closely followed.

If anyone out there is familair with the RM/X or RM-40's can he/she tell me a little about how I'd like the 3's?  My room is larger than average (15.25' x 22.9' x 10'), is dedicated, doubles for HT, and has been treated fairly well with RealTraps, etc.   My gallery on Audio Circle shows my room if anyone really cares.  Thx,

Ted

P.S.  Great forum.

Hey ted_b,

I just read the review and I must say I am very very interested. The more I read the more I think a set of RL 1.5s would be perfect for my listening room and current goals. (I'm putting the headphone trials on hold for now)

As for the design of the 3.0 vs the 1.5, I think it's more of a cost issue in that the 3.0 cabinets might be cheaper to assemble (I'm guessing here) and better aimed at a larger production run than the cylindrical 1.5s.

My concern is the placement of the omni-directional speaker on top of the 3.0s. It looks as if this might change the overall ability of the speaker to radiate 360 degrees. But I'm not sure this would be a serious issue since the 3.0s also have a speaker shooting straight forward.

Either way, I'm becoming more and more enthralled with the idea of purchasing a set of radials! Cheesy

Wonderful to read this review, thanks for posting.

Makes you want to check out a First Watt (MUST resist!) (I already know how fabulous Radials are!)

Interesting review of my speaker cables too (I sure didn't spend that much for them!)

Thanks Ted for the post - Very interesting!
To answer your question, I think the R1.5s came out at a similar time as the R3s. Having said that, the R3's were a newer development in that they were intended as a totally retail/distributor model whereas the R1.5 appeared to be a consolidated R1 + R2 design aimed squarely at the factory-direct market.

Makes you want to check out a pair of Radials (MUST resist!) - It's a pity we're not neighbours Lon. We could have killed 2 birds with 1 stone.  ;D

It's all, of course, so very system and personal taste dependent. For example, HomeyHomes couldn't agree with the CSP whilst I totally love it, and I couldn't work with Ed's buffered preamp whilst he loves his. This audiophilia is a very funny business... Cheesy

One thing I forgot to say was that I visited Walrus Systems last week and auditioned their Duevel speakers just for kicks and grins.

Very interesting...As with the Radials they too use omnidirectional techniques to create a diffused soundstage. Well, if the Radials are anything like the Duevels then the soundstage is quite amazingly large.

Those Duevels are GORGEOUS.  I BET they're expensive too!  Must have been nice to hear.

Yes, if we were neighbors. . . I bet you'd be ordering Radials.  I had an interested party look me up and stop by this weekend to listen. . . . He is a Maggie owner who wanted to get away from the "head in a vise" and "needing lots of power" factors of his speakers.  After spending a few hours listening to his music on the RL2s, he emailed me yesterday that he called Steve up, talked to him, and ordered RL3s! Yeah - Totally gorgeous, but not cheap at all. The Radials by comparison are a total bargain.

I first heard the Duevels with a 10 watt 300b tube amp and they sounded, although warm, very sloppy in the bass. When the dealer put in a Brinkman SS amp, the sound was quite glorious. The amp/speaker combination would have set me back around $14K. Ahem, not my price bracket....Besides, my Hornshoppe Horns/F1 combo sound really nice on a Sunday night to give the Duevels/Brinkman a run for their money. That's why I'm probably going to concentrate on my power supply (ie P500) before doing anything else.

It's good to know that should I decide to try out the Radials in the future, they won't be totally imcompatible with my F1.

Say, Does anybody know if John Mazur, the one that did the POSITIVE FEEDBACK review of the RL 1.5s, the same guy as our own John_M on the Decware Forum? Just wondering.... Jerry

I listened to the VMPS RM30s this past summer and, recognizing they are wonderful speakers, my immediate impression of the 1.5s was that I liked the Radials better.  I also listened to the RMS Elixir with the FST ($14,900).  They are amazing speakers (8+ feet tall, 370 lbs), but I am hearing things in my music now that the VMPS speakers could not deliver.  I prefer my "little" 1.5s over both the RM30 and the RMS Elixir.  And the soundstage on the VMPS speakers was narrow.
