Title: Taming a Torii Jr. V2 w/Klipsch Cornwalls
Post by Itube on 10/20/22 at 18:44:10

I've had a Torii Jr. V2 for about 2 weeks, long enough to get some impressions.  I'm noticing a glare on some recordings playing through a Oppo BDP-105, connected to a Denafrips Pontus II Dac.  I'm coming from a restored Fisher 500c that I still have, and I'm switching back and forth between the 2 amps.  The Fisher has a richer sound, but the Torii has more detail.  For cables it's Audioquest Turqouise Hyperlitz copper IC's, and Wireworld Helix copper speaker cables.  I have red tipped 6n5p in the input stage.  Would switching to a 5ar4 rectifier tube smooth it out some?

Other suggestions appreciated.

In part you are suffering from the benefit of having more detail, and your source is showing you a bit more of its character. In short though a different rectifier might help. A 5V4 or 5U4GB, 5R4 or a 5AR4 . . . it is hard to say which may be a "smoother" choice. I have no personal experience with those speakers; another here may.

Hi Itube!  I’m pretty sure that Lon is spot on in his analysis.  When I was using my OPPO 205 as a transport feeding my Pontus ii, I experienced the same thing you are.  It wasn’t until I switched to a Jay’s Audio transport that the top end glare completely disappeared.  And now that I think about it, I probably was unjustly critical of my Torii Jr when the real culprit was my OPPO UDP.

Good luck with tubes, cables, etc. as you work to smooth out the top end!

Try a Decware DSR3.  This may be an inexpensive but probably worthwhile upgrade.  Also the new Decware speaker wires are very, very good.  I use a Jay's CDT too which is a lot more money and they seem to work best with I2S.  I use all of the above with my Torii V2.

Thanks for replies.  I have the DSR3, so I'll look at the other options for a different CDP, the Jay's transport does seem like a significant upgrade.

I'm late to the party, but I will tell that my experience with the Cornwalls was speaker that sounded forward if not glaring to the point that I sold them a few months after I bought them. I even neatly added heavy duty pots made just for this to turn down the midrange and treble as I saw fit. Didn't matter enough. That was many years ago, but I never looked back. I hope that you don't have the same experience with them as I did. My JBL horns sounded well mannered  in comparison.
