Title: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:10:15 I bought another kit: |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:12:05 It’s a flat pack that allows me to proceed directly to glue up and then to Heat Lock veneering. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:15:45 The laurel burl comes complete with imperfections, buy I don’t know that I mind so much. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:17:48 The iron-on aspect of the gluing process surprised me when the veneer started to expand as I got to the edges. More cracking, I’m just going to say it gives them character. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:19:58 Some wiped on yellowed shellac for some color. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:21:03 And then wipe on satin poly to finish. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:22:16 And done. Now I really do have too many speakers. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 19:23:23 Nice enough from the back, too. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by Dana on 11/18/21 at 20:39:35 WOW! very nice to look at but what do they sound like? Inquisitive ears want to know. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/18/21 at 21:23:40 I haven’t given them the run-in they deserve but my first impression while building was pretty good. Obviously with such a small woofer a subwoofer is required to get deep bass but my initial guess is they go at least to 80hz before the bottom takes a steep drop. I really like Danny Richie's approach to voicing a speaker so there's that caveat. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by Brian on 11/20/21 at 03:48:01 The burl wood is a beauty! Are those the Accuton ceramic dome drivers? Brian |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 11/20/21 at 12:50:14 I don’t know the branding but his description calls them aluminum. The top end has a very “airy” quality and isn’t harsh at all. I was suitably impressed as it isn’t an expensive kit. Also, not terribly efficient unfortunately (at least when I tested them in my shop) so I think maybe suitable only for near field use which the kit name implies. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by Donnie on 11/20/21 at 17:07:16 Very nice! I wish that my stuff came out looking that good. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by Brian on 11/22/21 at 03:55:49 Thank you, EdwardT for the information. They sure look sharp! Brian |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by EdwardT on 12/23/21 at 15:38:23 I’m putting them in an auction for a friend who is going to need help with medical bills and I assembled a little system: Dayton hybrid amp (Parts Express) and counterfeit Kimber Kables along with a decent power cable. In our small, cluttered office they sounded awesome. The cables are genuine Kimber ends with 16 line helix weave stock from Aliexpress in a tec sheath. |
Title: Re: Desktop Mini build Post by Brian on 12/24/21 at 02:15:45 That is a good looking system! I hope it brings a good price for your friend. Brian |
