Title: New Listening Room for this years fest!
Post by Steve Deckert on 09/08/21 at 04:23:00

We have added a second listening room to this years fest. A free-standing 10x17 room that contains the ZF15M, Randy's baffles that he brings, and a few other surprises!

The room is exciting because it is an example of what you can do for just under 5K including treatment on an extreme budget if you live in a warmer area or for year round use perhaps 7K.  It's not pretty, but it sounds really good, better than most homes. My hope is that it will be an inspiration to those with yards big enough for a small shed like this. Also it will be popular 24/7 during the show. It sounds great. It does some things better than the big room. It has speed and the bass is rich and you feel it in the floor.

So far I have been testing it with the SE84UFO and a pair of ZF15M baffles driven by the Cambridge CXNv2, nothing else.  It's quite compelling. Randy should feel quite at home since it is similar to his listening shed, which was the inspiration.

Steve

One thing I noticed right away is how much louder a 2.3 watt Zen Triode gets than I've heard in quite some time...  the main listening room takes several dB out of it compared to this.  It was fun to turn it up loud and A) not hear the amp clip and B) not hear the knee point of the room, which is quite high for such a small space.  I suspect it will be a huge hit at this years fest.

There are times when "less is more"

Randy,

Are the speakers tilted back? If so, are you experimenting, or is this a preference now?

Very best,

Geno

Hi Geno,

There are 1" tall fiber cones under the front of the baffles in this photo.
Truthfully, I don't hear any difference in my system with them or without them.
My listening seat is 7 to 8 feet from the plane of the speakers.
I know that some Betsy baffle owners have reported good results with tilting the baffles back slightly, while others are hearing the same thing that I am.

I don't recommend creating a wide gap between the base of the baffle and the floor because some of the "coupling" could be lost which would affect the tonal balance ..... however, your mileage may vary.

It's possible that the effect is either room dependent or dependent on the distance between the baffles and the listening seat ..... just guessing .....

Best wishes,
Randy

I sure had a positive impact from tilting my Big Betsys back 7 degrees and I noticed that Steve still has his tilted back in the video he posted yesterday.  It could be that the smaller baffles are less sensitive to tilt.

I built my Betsy Baffles with the Wild Burro drivers from one of Randy's flatpack kits... I cut an angle on the base that the baffle attaches to, of a little over 10 degrees (I can't remember exactly).
I took the baffle and a laser at the position where the speakers set, and put the laser perpendicular to the the baffle and then aimed the laser at a point where my ears are when seated in my listening chair.  And then measured the angle... it was a little more than 10 degrees.. maybe 12-13 degrees... not more than 15.  Anyway, the Betsy's soundstage image floats well above the speakers themselves in my room.  But the Betsy's  tend to do this anyway, at least with all the ones I've heard at Decfest - even if they aren't tilted back.

Steve, What is: "the knee point of the room"?
