Title: First impressions of SE84C+
Post by chapsjon on 08/17/21 at 02:55:29

I just purchased an SE84C+ about a week ago. As I just moved back to the US from Japan and all my household goods are on a cargo ship somewhere in the middle of the Pacific, my room is far from set up. I am listening right now on some decent Sony SS-AL3 speakers, but they are only 86db efficient. My apartment is pretty bare while I wait for everything to arrive, so I am sure my room is far from ideal. Although I normally listen to vinyl, my only option right now is a Dragonfly Cobalt and Qobuz. Even with all these caveats, I am very impressed! The low efficiency speakers are not really an issue because I am keeping the volume down anyway due to the empty apartment and being respectful, so in reality I am using more of a near field set up. I am amazed at how full the sound is with good bass. I expected that it would be listenable but obviously lacking due to current considerations, but to be honest, there seems to be little lacking in the low volume near field. I imagine if I cranked it I would start getting lots of reflection that would negatively impact the sound, but I am just enjoying it as is. With these results already, I fully expect to be really impressed once I get the amp properly set up. I do think this is a testament to Decware. Even in austere conditions, they sound far better than one would think.
I was already very familiar with the Mini Torii sound and quite happy. I wanted to add the Zen for comparison. I will post with further thoughts once my things arrive and I can set this up properly, but wanted to share how surprised I was that a very simple set up without much investment in a far from ideal room can sound very good.

I should add that until I get my stuff, I am streaming Qobuz to DFC via an iPhone 12 using 5g data. This might be good for others to know that this works better than I thought it would.
I recently added Qobuz in anticipation of this move and need for music while I wait for physical media and equipment to arrive. I had tried Tidal about 6-8 months ago but constantly had the iPhone app crash on me. Since my primary purpose for streaming at the time was music on the go, this was a deal breaker for me. While I cannot compare sound quality of Tidal vs Qobuz head to head due to the gap in service between them of 5 months or so, I can say that I haven't had the technical difficulties with Qobuz that I had with Tidal. The Qobuz app has not crashed on me once in the several weeks I have been using it, whereas it was a regular occurrence with Tidal.

Congrats on the new amp.

I bought a C+ that had been upgraded to a CKC in July; at first I put it in my main system to test it out (I converted it from mono to stereo).

Then I moved it to a spare bedroom system with 90 dB Foxtex 4 inch drivers and now it is hooked up to Snell K IIs which are also @ 90 dB. It works well in a nearfield setup with less than ideal speakers.

The amp hasn't seen much use yet because of the hot weather and being in my secondary system.

FWIW if you break up a long post it is easier to read. :)

Thanks for the feedback Lin, on both the amp on how to best present a long post. I'm a relative newb in both regards.
