Title: ZBox Input Level
Post by designtaylor on 06/08/20 at 22:37:43

Recently became the proud owner of a ZBox. I first tried it in my headphone system with my DAC feeding directly into it and then it into my amp. Sounded great. Moved it into my main 2-channel set up and the sound got rough. It feels like it is being overdriven or something. It is now connected to a Cambridge CXN V2 streamer and then into the preamp. Could the output on the streamer be too much for the ZBox? I put it later in the chain but that caused even more issues.

You can try searching the Forum.  I think the input voltage limit is given somewhere.  I sort of remember 4 volts but don't take my word on it.

Thanks Archie. I can't believe that the streamer is putting out more than that. Wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Well I swapped what I believe was the stock tube (second owner, no markings) with a JJ ECC82 / 12AU7 that I had on hand and that seems to have resolved the issue. The ZBOX is sitting in between the steamer and my preamp. Cranked up it is the quietest of my sources but that's ok as I've got plenty of headroom.

Seems like I'll be focusing on the 12AU7 for my tube rolling adventures. Recommendations welcome!
