Title: Getting ready for some long awaited video demos
Post by Steve Deckert on 01/25/20 at 03:14:48

Tonight I have set up the Lii Reference speakers in preparation for making some video demos of how they sound.

I am pairing them with the 25th Anniversary Amplifier and to get them warmed up I have been listening to PS Audio's Reference Playlist that I found on Qobuz.  About half way into it the following classic track came on:

Mussorgsky : M.P.: Pictures at an Exhibition - Stravisnki : 3 Movements From Petrushka, and the organ on this track is so awesome https://open.qobuz.com/track/4523143 it got me to thinking gee what speakers would I choose if Paul (of PS Audio) were ever in the area and stopped by for a listen?

I thought that coming from Infinity IRS 5 speakers that he has, which are a line source of midrange dipoles with EMIT tweeters all over the front and back and 6 large woofers in floor to ceiling boxes on each side...  I would want to pick something similar sounding, so I would be torn between the ZF15L or these Lii Reference speakers... but I think the Lii would take it, because they have a similar shimmer on the top end like the EMIT tweeters, and have the lower bass registers to make this track sound and feel completely real.., so yea, probably the Lii Reference as that would have the range that he is used to. But I would also have to play the ZF15L's to demonstrate what tight bass sounds like before he left. ; ). He would recognize that heavy mass sound that only heavy mass speakers have.

Anyway I am enjoying the sound, each time I set them up I get a little better at positioning them, plus they continue to break in and tonight they are sounding simply beautiful and it's fun to watch them handle everything from the delicate female vocal to the insane electronic music or full orchestra with equal finesse, and all with a 2 watt amplifier.  The track above is perhaps the most convincing demonstration of what is possible with 2 Decware watts on 100dB crossoverless point-source speakers I've heard in awhile... I wouldn't be able to top it.  It's the kind of track that you would expect to require a system like Pauls to properly reproduce it. That is why when you hear it properly reproduced on such a polar opposite system using only two watts you naturally find it amazing.

As I continue to listen to these, I just muse at how good the frequency balance is and how wide a range they have.  Not a single note that gets pinched or bloated, just natural.  And this coming from months of listening to boxless speakers, it's saying a lot.

Anyway, they really are one of the best reflex enclosures I've heard. So similar to the 1950's when audio started to peak. These are such a reminder of how far we've regressed since then, with slow power hungry speakers, impedance balanced crossover networks, loose high mass woofers, feedback laden amplifiers of 100's of watts minimum, and the only thing that got better is the story. The sound got worse. This is a clear reminder of that.

When I think about it, for the price of the amp and these speakers, I would LOVE to hear something that sounds as good let alone with only two watts! I really would.
