Title: General Support Question
Post by Reptar on 09/10/19 at 23:19:16

Does anyone know if you can safely substitute a 12BH7A for the 12AU7 in the ZROCK2? I searched the forum but didn't see anything. The 12BH7A has higher heater current requirements than the 12AU7.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
Steve

Wouldn’t harm anything. I tried one in my ZSTAGE and it worked fine. Didn’t sound better than the 5814 12au7 variant I had in there though.

Yep probably safe to use, when I subbed those in for 12AU7's on a few preamps, they sounded OK at first, but over time they just didn't sound right.

I've tried about 7 different 12AU7 variants in my ZROCK2s (one with the full mods and the silver RCA jacks, one with just the silver RCA jacks and beeswax caps) and have decided that the one to use and keep using is the 5814a tube. Mark58 alerted me to this tube and I have an RCA backplate that I really like and an Amperex that is slightly different sounding and very good and I have been using both recently.
