Post by HockessinKid on 09/05/19 at 17:24:59

For everyone's listening pleasure, I put together this TIDAL playlist for our upcoming Decfest. I hope we can give this a listen next month. Those that can't make it out, I hope you enjoy it - just some of my recent favorites.

Thanks for putting this together.  I am creating one just for the Big Betsy's.

I met Pinetop Perkins once at a bar in Chicago!

Can I bring music on flash drive and micro sd?  I also have a Fiio HD with mostly cd quality music.  I would like to hear familiar music on different equipment and the Big Betsy's.

Welcome to the forum!  Sure you can bring music on flash drives, SD cards, micoSD cards, or even CD's and LP's and Tapes, Cassette or Reels.  Also we have Tidal and Qobuz streaming available.  For digital the best medium is going to be flash drives (usb stick).

So are you saying no to polka music?
I'm also fond of Norwegian death metal and country rap.

Donnie,

I was driving through southern Colorado this summer, trying to find something decent on the radio, when I came across a station playing Mexican reggae. Funniest damn thing you ever heard. Check it out.

Steve... I noticed new forum member “ Averageguy” was requesting to bring flash drives.  Just to verify...doesn’t the drive need to formatted as a FAT/ FAT32.  I  was the problem child last year that had an issue with the flash drives.  I knew that you used a MAC and I made the mistake of formatting my flash drive as a Mac OS Extended Drive. Luckily I was able to use move my music to one of your computers, reformat the drive,  move them back, and then I was in business.

“AVERAGEGUY”..... I would recommend to have your music files as a FLAC filetype for the best possible resolution.  Prior to Decfest...I spent some time at home selecting music from my collection that I wanted to enjoy.

I am totally going to miss Decfest this year.  I was truly a great experience.   BUT....I will be enjoying the experience via livestream like I have done for the past 5 years.

I've been eyeballing the Peoria weather for next week, 90's with heat indexes close to the 100's until Thursday then the bottom drops out of everything and it turns to fall weather. Mid sixties and intermittent rain. We can't seem to catch a break weatherwise.
So bring clothing for changing conditions. Shorts, flip flops and parkas.

For those of you who won’t be able to attend Decfest (myself included ☹️) here is the link to watch and listen to the livestream.

Since I do the graveyard shift...I have always enjoyed tuning in like a day or two before the event to see the test and tuning of the gear.   I can remember a few years ago ( before my 1st Decfest) watching the live stream on Friday and Saturday night at like 3 AM, and was amazed how many guys were running hard.

Enjoy everyone ....and just remember.....I’LL BE WATCHING 👀 YOU !!

I'm trying to figure out loudness and I wonder if the audible conversation is an indication?  You'd never hear people over the music in my typical listening session.  For those on site, how loud can it go?  Does/can it ever get too loud with the ZEN25?

Dom,

Heard the HR-1's this morning driven by 25th Anniversary amp and ZTPRE preamp. Sounded great. I'll email you a 2 minute video when I get to WiFi.  As long as you have an active preamp, you should get plenty of volume from this combination.

I'll bet the ZBIT was in there between the ZTPRE and the amps. That's my setup plus the ZROCK2:  DAC to ZTPRE to ZBIT to ZROCK2 to the 25th Anniversary Monoblocks to the HR-1. Fantastic sound. I want for nothing audio.

I'm curious to hear what people think of the Lii Audio Crystal 10's (box speaker.)

Does Steve announce new products or mods after decfest? I've been waiting to contact them about a Torii MKiv until after decfest. I'm guessing its a little hectic the weeks before.

It's weird "spying" on people listening  ;D

Another Decfest is in the can. This was the fourth that I was able to attend. I went in 2017 but missed 2018 only because I did not reserve the day far enough in advance.

A hearty thank you to Devon, Steve, Sarah and everyone else who prepared for and threw the fest. It has to be a lot of work. And the fruits of this work are pure enjoyment for all who attend. The Deckert’s are sharing their business and passion for music and audio equipment.

I had a great time. Met some new people and saw some folks I already knew. The star of the show was the anniversary Zen amp and preamp with the Big Betsy Baffle speakers. It was an amazing combination, living up to all the comments Steve has made.

All in all, another great fest!

It was another great Decfest. Many thanks to DeVon, Steve and Sarah. Also huge kudos to Bob, Litefoot Dan, Randy and Chris for their many contributions to the event.

There were so many new offerings and they all sounded great.  The new Lii Audio drivers, F-15 and Crystal 10's, are the real deal folks. Also, Bob's new HR speakers sounded stunning with both the 25th Anniversary combo and the ZMA. The Betsy's were amazing, too.

BTW, Steve informed us that his special sauce platforms will be up on the website soon. They look spectacular and will be available in a variety of woods to match up to your amp/preamp base. I think Bob will be very busy getting these ready for upcoming orders.

This years Decfest crowd was large & as always great to see old friends and meet new ones.  Steve may have to build a two story parking platform for next year, but he does have a new woodworking shop😁.

Jeff, to your question about the Crystal 10 speakers in the Lii Audio cabinets, shoot a PM to Lonely Raven. He did some critical listening and had some thoughts on them.

What a blast .....

The buildup to this year's Fest was pretty intense and being there did not disappoint .....

The Lii Audio F-15 drivers in Steve's "big baffles" were a revelation.
The sense of scale and low end were absolutely amazing with any amplifier I heard them with, including the two watt per channel amps.

I really liked the Lii Audio cabinets with the Crystal 10 drivers as well.

The mystery amp was a treat and I even got to hear it with my version of the F-15 baffles. That is one SERIOUS amplifier .....

As usual, the hospitality was over the top as well as the food and drink.
Hats off to DeVon and Litefoot Dan .....

It's really amazing that over the years a "sense of family" has developed among those who have attended and it was evident again this year.
It was so good to see the many familiar faces and quite a few new ones.
Sadly, a few of my favorites didn't make it this year.
You know who you are .....

Looking forward to Decware Fest 2020 .....

Best wishes and happy listening to all,
Randy

From all of us at Decware, we thank you for another fantastic audio fest!  This is the 17th one in a row, always the first full weekend in October.  It was in the 80's and even 90's just days before the fest and then cooled off to fest like temperatures in the 60's during the day and cool bonfire temperatures at night!

A special thanks to all those who have attended past fests, as you have become like family to us, and since this has been going on for so long now, DECFEST has a real family reunion thing going on that is most enjoyable.

My personal observations about equipment are as follows...

Every year I set up what I think is possibly the best sounding combination of gear before the fest and have it playing on Friday when the fest starts.  I like to see how long it will capture everyones attention before it gets swapped out for something someone came to hear...  which basically means it has to sound so good that people either forgot about what they came to hear or simply decide to wait to ask to hear it because everyone is raving about what is playing.

This year, something happened that has never happened.  The entire fest was run with a 2 watt amplifier, with only a few hours of higher power.  The amp was the 25th Anniversary Zen Triode and it was paired with the new 25th Anniversary CSP3 preamp driving the Zen Big Open Baffles that we will be selling under the model # ZBOB of which there is a thread called "Steve's Big Betsy Project" chronicling the development of those speakers in real time.

These speakers are 100dB with no crossover, and are single driver.  One redefined what everyone thought good bass sounded like and one redefined what people thought good highs sounded like. Both were so compelling that they dominated the fest all three days which is why the 2 watt amp was so successful. Imagine a large room with 40 people talking and music is playing and people are trying to listen to it... then add in a little rain to boost the noise floor further and up until this fest, things like the Zen Mystery Amp, and the Zen TORII's had to be called upon to get the job done. This year the 2 watt amp kicked everything's ass with the help of these speakers.

Some of the DECFEST family members came this year bearing gifts!!!  I got some records, and reel to reel tapes, and some really great beer so I'm happier than shit right now!  Thank you!

On the West end of the room was the Lii Audio Crystal 10 flagship speakers driven by, yes another 2 watt amplifier, the SE84UFO3 (bone stock with no mods) and these speakers sounded like there was a 250 watt hi-current amplifier playing with a 1200 watt high current subwoofer backing it up. It was crazy.

So while I sure everyone did notice, it was like no-one really noticed since the volumes and bass performance was like all years prior, the only difference being 2 watts instead of 25,30, and  40 watts.

Regarding the three Lii-Audio driven speakers:  Crystal 10 cabinet, Crystal 10 baffle, F15 baffle. All three were 100dB. The Crystal 10 cabinet went so low that it would embarrass the vast majority of subwoofers. The F15 baffle hit so hard it made the mid bass of every other speaker in the building seem lacking, including the Crystal 10 cabinet and Crystal 10 baffle. The Crystal 10 baffle is more open sounding than the Crystal 10 cabinet, but just barely.  Since the Crystal 10 baffle that we will offer has to be packaged with a ZROCK2 class A triode tube equalizer for bass control, it will cost easily over twice as much as the Crystal 10 cabinet by Lii Audio, so the cabinet clearly wins that war from a monetary perspective.

The F15 baffle kicked everythings ass to a point that it made it harder to shift gears into other speakers.  So this fest confirmed everything I've said (and claimed) about the F15 drivers in my large baffles as well as the 2 watt Anniversary Zen Triode amplifier and the incredible hit that it has in the bass... better than larger amplifiers in most cases so it was fun to let people hear this since it's obviously rather unusual.

The Big Betsy (model ZBOB) also sounded great with the ZKIT60 solid state amplifier that we enjoy so much from Dan K.  Dan has built a pair of MDF Big Betsy clones and Palimino has built a pair of solid oak clones that are half as thick and both reported they don't sound like the originals.  Dan is going to make some hardwood models to compare and Palimino may double the thickness of his to see the difference, or may not because as he discovered, his sound a bit lighter and he kind of likes it.

I got to see some good friends from years ago who inspired and mentored me in how to market a product, a skill set I have largely wasted due to being too busy keeping my hands directly on each product that goes out the door...  nevertheless I have learned from the best and am eternally grateful for their time.

We got to listen to some great reel to reel tapes from UltraAnalog Recordings and other present day labels along with some good vinyl which we contrasted with some mediocre vinyl to hear how large the gap actually is...  large.

Randy's Caintuck Audio baffles were a big hit this year with his new baffle offerings that are stupidly affordable... kind of a "from one music lover to another" thing on the pricing of this mans speakers and still the all time winner of best sounding speaker for the money.

Bob Ziegler's new Radial (HR-2?) prototype was well liked as I knew it would be. By repeating the latest HR-1 updates where the top driver is crossover-less, but using an 8-inch driver instead of a 6, this speaker sounds enough better to be called an HR-2 as far as I'm concerned. Bob came a week early this year so we could build a plywood version of the "Big Betsy" so we could pin down a low end figure on the pricing. It was a lot of fun to work on something together in my new shop. We got 7 inches of rain, nearly struck by lightning more than once, and almost blown away by tornadoes for 2 of those days. I was grateful for building the shop with a 12 pitch roof because the rain and even hail was not loud enough inside the building to be a problem.

The live feed was watched by 900 people world wide, and was said to sound better than it ever has except during those times when people were SPL testing the speakers to see how loud they could play which distorted the feed. This is what happens with a high fidelity feed, where there is no compressor.

No UFO's were spotted this year, so apparently my scalar grid that extends 10 miles beyond Decware property in every direction is effective. Besides cloaking the 25th Anniversary amplifier and preamp from alien scans, it also seems to mitigate negative energy in general. ; )

Instead of standing outside looking for UFO's each night, everyone chilled in the wood shop with the doors open overlooking the bond-fire and listening to the original Zen Triode Amplifier - model SE84 serial number 001, now over 25 years old and still ticking like a time clock. I had it playing on my old Sansui speakers from the 1970's that still remain in perfect condition and are themselves nearly 100dB.

The food this year was exceptional with in house Chefs, Dan and DeVon you are never disappointed. The weather was great, the mood was sublime.  Thanks everyone for caring enough to drive and fly all the way over hear from all over the country. If pictures are worth a thousand words, then actions are worth a million and your attendance says it all... in fact it and this forum are what make what I do real to me. We have no local business whatsoever, we see the UPS man every day and thats it with the exception of weekly listening appointments we are isolated. This forum and fest keep it ultra real.  When people pull you aside and share their stories with you and you are part of their story, it is very humbling and it makes you constantly try harder...

-Steve, DeVon and crew.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone for the first time.  I'm not surprised that the big betsy's were so much appreciated by the other members that attended.  I've had what I consider my fair share of auditioning speakers and can say without a doubt the Big Betsy's are the best speaker I've ever heard.  Upon further listening at home I'm just wondering if 100db is a conservative number.  We were getting 104db on our initial test runs last night.

Thank you Steve Deckert for your passion for this hobby.  I really enjoyed the festival along with Dan.  I'm sure we will be making more festivals in the upcoming years.

Sincerely

Pal,

Thanks for posting the great Decfest TIDAL playlists. Great song selections and they sound wonderful on my system. Can't wait to hear them on the Lii Audio F-15 baffles Randy is building for me😁.  They sounded amazing at Decfest with the 25th Anniversary combo and really won me over driven by the Mystery amp.

I really liked the sound of the F-15 drivers at Decfest and talked my wife into the importance of a second, backup pair of speakers.

After switching over from Tidal to Qobuz, I have enjoyed Qobuz so much that I don’t feel the need to switch back.  For a while I kept both subscriptions so I could convert my playlists over with an online program, but then cancelled Tidal once the conversion was complete.

BTW, I am a little taken aback that nobody has offered a review of Donnie's garbage can boombox.

The can itself must have set him back $20!  The paperclip power connectors to the drill battery were beyond clever and the pillows for stuffing looked like they were pulled from his couch at great risk to his personal safety.

Does no one in this group recognize genius?

P.S.  Sorry people put their used plates and beer bottles in there Donnie.

It did it's job, I was asked to turn it down and point it a different direction because the bass notes were overpowering the listening room.

I wish that I could have been there. Fall is such a busy time of year for my family.  I was even more disappointed when I realized that I forgot to tune into the stream.  I have really enjoyed the stream in the past.  Sometimes the environmental noise ( like the sound of a door) is so real  I keep telling my headphones off to check.  It's been a few years since my first/last Decfest visit, I'm going to have to try to plan earlier next year.
