Title: Good quality 807 adaptors?
Post by hdrider on 08/19/18 at 15:55:15

I have bought a couple of sets of the 807 to EL34 adaptors off various sellers on eBay and the quality really doesn't seem to be too good. Has anyone found a better quality version or made their own and want to share their experience? I have one I have to resolder the wire to the anode cap today and would think that someone somewhere offers up a better version. Just curious. Happy listening, Chris.

Ok, no comments. I can totally understand that. So, I will design one, build a pair at the machine shop I work at (state of the art 5 Axis) and show them to you. I love the 807's in our Rachael and am just bugged by the low end stuff I have to use to enjoy them. Stay tuned kiddies....happy listening, Chris.

I've no experience with the 807 tubes, but the adaptors that I have liked the most are ceramic with brass. I think they might sound a bit better, I sure like they way they look and "feel" better.

I ordered the eBay ones from China. The quality sucks. I know, shocking!

I had to get the seller to send me another one. I tried them with a "matched set" of old RCA's. It sounded great but then started getting a buzz (not from the beer!). Then quickly shut the amp down. Thought it may be the old tubes. Then I bought the Russian equivalent tube. The same thing happened, after awhile I started to get a buzzing sound. Back to the EL34's.

If anyone has a source for a quality adaptor please post it!

Thanks!

Maximatcher.com sells 807 adapters, but they are $99 a piece.i have no idea of the quality.i bought mine on eBay from China and so far have had no issues, lucky I guess.

Keith - Thanks for the lead on the maximatcher adaptors, they look really well built. I have gathered enough of the ebay stuff to get a pair working well enough to use (soldering, insulating) without any noise or problems. If I was to make some at the shop it would cost me a lot more than the maximatcher's. I still like my 807's the best, I have a new set coming soon so I'll be set for this winters indoor time.

My 807 adapters were from ebay, too. I used them to test a group of 807 tubes in my tube tester. The adapters survived this effort. I only had to  tighten the metal clips inside the cap a bit.

Not that it means anything I was using some National Union wartime production 807s from January 1945. They were old stock. These tested out at 3300 & 3900 where 5000 is new/nominal for the 6L6 (electrical equivalent). All the other 807s I tested came in at 5500-6000 each. So the tubes I was using were roughly half as strong as they should have been. I put some 1970's RCA Military production and they sound very lively.

HD rider, Did you ever build your own?  I have toyed with that on other tubes that needed extensions and extensions are not availble.  I have a manual machine shop but I can get 'er done.

What did/are you using for material that will take the heat and is machinable?

thanks,
Jerry

Jerry - Sorry for the too long delay in getting back to you about the adaptors. Short answer is no, never got that close. The material would have been some high temp teflon rod we had at the shop. Then I looked at buying parts and just soldering them up myself but really have only had one failure on the four ebay/china adaptors, and I just ended up re-soldering the connection. Actually glad the shop is and has been so busy for so long and if I had to put a $$ value on making them it would be crazy. Check out www.westvalleyprecision.com if you want to see some guys way smarter than me making some cool stuff. Love our Decware gear, love the music. Happy listening, Chris.

Has anyone asked Steve what adapters they might use?

Could someone provide a link to the ebay 807 adapters please?  Many of the listings are quite confusing........thanks.

Not ebay, but a couple of other sources.

Here are the ebay ones I purchased.  One thing you have to figure out is which of the several tubes that fit in the socket do they label them with.  Turns out they like to use 6L6.  I am happy with the quality of these, at least initially.

I have to give a shout out to Tubeman.  I do like his service as well.  Bought 807s with adapters and was quite pleased with the turnaround, and the fact that he updated my tubes.

How do you update a tube?  thanks.

I think my wording was wrong...or typing...upgraded with a better recommendation that I bought.
The Ferranti's were out of stock, so he recommended the RCAs.

I believe upthread someone mentioned they bought both.  Would like to hear their opinion on the difference in sound, if any.

I got a pair of 807 adapters from Ebay.  Works great, but recently had the seller send a replacement since it started to have an odor, but no smoke.  Seller was happy to send one.

I found some ‘Mercian made adapters sold by a reputable tube seller on eBay. Unfortunately they don’t have any more

I have both the Ferrantis and the RCAs - funnily enough both from Tubeman.

I think I prefer the sound of the RCAs. There's a presence there that's hard to describe but it just pulls me in. The Ferrantis alas also died quite early, whereas so far the RCAs have been a solid win. They sounded fine, but I felt the RCAs, on my rig, had the edge.

I also bought a pair of the Sylvania 5933's. I haven't done a proper compare with those with the RCAs, I will try tonight... but I do quite recommend the stock of RCAs he has.

R.

Well to come full circle on the adapters to use 807's in our Rachael amp, I did order a pair on 1-26-2023 from MaxiMatcher via the website. I looked up my order two weeks later and it still said ''processing''...I looked again a week after I rec'd the adapters at the end of April and it still says the same. I did rec'v them, they are well built and solid. Nothing flimsy or cheap about them. I would not hesitate to recommend them, but don't bother trying to get any status from this company, it won't happen. The wait time is less than ordering an amp from Steve, just order them and forget about it. Sorry I didn't take a pic to post, but worth the 99.00 each. Out of the six off shore adapters i've ordered for 807's there is one pair left working. Nuff said, Happy Listening all. Chris

Here's where I got mine and many other adapters. No problem at all. The pic shows the tallest 807 tubes and the adapters  are long enough. I use the 5933 which is shorter.

I'm not sure about the Rachel but in the Mini Torii for me it's the 5833w's then the 807 st shaped hands down. I do love a good el34 though.   [smiley=cool.gif]
