Title: Songs or Bands With Superlative Harmonies
Post by Dana on 05/28/18 at 16:00:13

In a similar vein to Lon’s acoustic guitar I’d like start a thread about vocal harmonies. There are some duets that come to mind for me.  Lyle Lovett and Rickie Lee Jones,  North Dakota on the Joshua Judges Ruth,  Patty Griffith and Emmylou Harris, Trapeze on Children Running Through. Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives Soul’s Chapel album and of last but not least Crosby Stills & Nash with and without Young.’

If you have a band or song that have outstanding sounding vocal harmonies please share.  I’ve never listened to Choral music but only because I’d never know where to start.  I’m open to all genres from the band HoneyHoney to Ray Charles.

My favorite: Marvin Gaye's multi-tracked harmonies, his own voices supporting his own voice. And probably my favorite example is the album
"What's Going On."

Also these other two of my three favorite Marvin Gaye albums feature his great harmonizing with himself. Gaye was a real talent, and he started out in doo-wop bands and knew multi-part harmonies very well, and with his vocal skill and studio skill was able to reinvent that aesthetic and craft with just his own voice.

It's almost time for me to listen to the Boswell Sisters again. . . once a year or so I go through their recordings. They definitely had cool harmonizing and Connee was a great lead.

Dana, no offense, but your animated avatar is obnoxious.  Can you have the same thing without the movement?

Onnoxious was kinda the point😂.  It's not like I use smiley faces ...OH.  let me see if I can find something that is slightly less objectionable but still allows my avitar self to shine thru

But do you have any vocal harmonies I should hear?

Thanks.  It was interfering with my ZEN!   ::)

Well, ... Mamas and Papas, of course.

Does it count if you post to your own thread asking for suggestions?

Since nobody else wants to contribute...

Then recently divorced from Steve Wonder, Syreeta Wright. Lots of Stevie on this one, which he produced. Best "talk box" harmonies ever!

OK, I must have been living under a rock for most of my life.  Why is I've never heard of this album?
Either that or my tastes have matured and I can now appreciate true genius.

Awesome harmonies, textures and musicality.

Who knew Art Blakey was known for vocal harmonies.  I'll have to try to find this one.

Sorry, wrong thread. . . I don't actively seek out superlative vocal harmonies, didn't mean to place it in this thread. I'll relocate it.

No worries I thought I was missing something.  The possibilities are awesome.

Okay, your search continues. No vocals on the Blakey. Some nice ensemble horn playing.

For cutting harmonies I would recommend Dailey and Vincent. Their album, Singing From The Heart is amazing and sharp. Then try The Fairfield Four for even more incredible harmonies. None better.

Try Aztec Two-Step.
Self titled album.
Great harmony and guitar playing.

The Thorns S/T Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge did a one-off with really decent songs. Stupendous Harmonies, well recorded. Seems like they're living their influences/ paying homage to  CSNY, Eagles, Tom Petty.

There's a deluxe version - disc 1 = album proper, disc 2 = same songs w/ just acoustic. Kind of a master class in when and how to orchestrate a barer boned song. As an armchair producer myself, I enjoy it immensely.

The Beatles cited this as the inspiration for “Because” on Abbey Road. The harmonies are pretty lush:

Also, these guys. There's a reason they were Vocal Group of the Year over and over in the 80s.

I'm a big fan of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and the Blue Stars (Parisian band of the 'fifties and 'sixties.)
