Title: Purp, purp, purp ...Purpleheart
Post by Randy in Caintuck on 03/16/18 at 00:41:53

One of my lumber suppliers was able to locate a nice slab of 18" wide Purpleheart hardwood for me.

I have enough to make two pairs of Betsy baffles and a single Alpha bass baffle.
One pair of Betsy baffles is in stock and ready to ship and can be found here on the available speakers page of my website.

They turned out very nicely and as usual the photo doesn't really do justice to the appearance of these baffles.

Larger photo here.

Happy listening,
Randy

Randy,

Is denser better?  Someday I might make a pair of these.  You sell just the plans and parts (no baffles), yes?

Randy, nice.
Purpleheart is a beautiful wood. You should put them in the sunlight and then take a pic. That would show off that color.

Hi Archie,

Caintuck Audio is my "retirement hobby / business" .....
I sell fully built speakers and plywood "flat packs" for music lovers who either don't have any woodworking tools or have no interest in building their own speakers.

If a person wishes to copy my designs, the dimensions are on my website and they can do so with my blessing .... however, I don't offer "plans" per se since the speakers are relatively simple.

The Betsy drivers can be ordered directly from Wild Burro Audio Labs.

As to your question about "density" ..... denser is "different".
Each material that the baffles are made from can sound slightly different, but "better" is in the ears of the beholder.
It depends on personal taste, the listening environment and the associated equipment.

Many people believe that a lack of resonance is always a better thing.
I'm not totally convinced of that. The sound board of any stringed instrument resonates, contributing to the sound.
My theory is "if it sounds good, it IS good".

Happy listening,
Randy

Thanks for the detailed reply.  I was hoping you had something like a parts package since I didn't want to just "rip off" your design.  I've got a shop so at some point I might put together a pair of these.  I've been keeping them in my back pocket as a speaker to use if I cave in to temptation with Steve's 25th anniversary amps.   :)

Hi Archie,

I appreciate that .....
You probably would not believe how many "DIY" guys who email me trying to be sneaky and wanting to pick my brain for information.

When they finally figure out that I'm telling them everything they want to know without them having to trick me, it's pretty humorous .....

I usually end up telling them that I'm just a DIY guy myself who happens to sell my DIY projects and has a lot of happy customers.

If you decide to build a pair of speakers based on my basic design ..... I always welcome a copy of one of your favorite CDs as full compensation .....

Best wishes,
Randy

BTW ..... the combo of the Betsy baffles and the Decware 25th Anniversary amp is a real "jaw dropper" .....

Hi Archie,

Not a problem ..... I'm not allergic to vinyl .....

Happy listening,

Randy,

I love purple heart. I once made a custom Irish Bouzouki for a young friend of mine (his dad hired me for Christmas). The fretboard was purple heart, the rest of the instrument was curly maple. Nicely finished in clear gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. May be the pretties instrument I have ever built. I think it gave him bragging rights with his peers, as none of them had any purple heart on any of their instruments.

Damn, Randy!

I already got Betsys in almost every room of my house, but those are gorgeous!
