Title: Hana EH HOMC Cartridge - ZP3 Compatibility
Post by Ron on 10/08/17 at 10:23:29

So I have heard great things about the Hana E series carts.
I am tempted to try one but I am not sure they will jive well with the ZP3.

The specs for the Hana EH are:

Loading:47 kΩ
Output: 2 mV

I was also looking at a SoundSmith Otello, but that has the same output voltage as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

Hey Ron,  A few months back I asked Steve that question. His response was: He tries to keep the input into ZP3 at 4mV min for best results. I bought the Ortofon 2m black at his suggestion and absolutely love it. I have upgraded wires, speakers and added Zstage since and the 2m has kept up with the improvements.

While waiting for a ZMC1 to arrive, I ran a LOMC cart (0.45 mv) with my ZP3 but with a CSP3 after.  Sounded good but any noise was amplified.  So, I wouldn't recommend 2 mv unless you have a pre and your ZP3 is very quiet.

If I did the math right, even a 4 mv cart only puts 1/2 volt out of the ZP3.  Most of Steve's amps need 2 volts in to achieve full power.

Thanks for the replies! I'll keep an eye on the 2M black or others with higher output.
