Title: Push-Pull or Single Ended?
Post by Brian on 06/18/17 at 03:23:54

In these fora I have seen much migration from Decware Single End to Decware Push-Pull.  Have any of you gone the other way?  After trying both did you prefer the sound of the Single Ended amp?

I prefer both. I will get a Decware single ended again. The anniversary ZEN or UFO Rachel. However, Steve's push pull.....sounds so single ended........... .

I have both and I like both!

Low-powered SET is most of the time problematic with speaker matching.  We are lucky these days, though, as there are many more alternative brands of speakers than 10-15 years ago.  For me, that system is the late-night listening heaven at low volume (I match my SE34I.2+ and TABOO mkIII with 91dB B&W's).

My other system is a Copland push-pull at 50W per channel with even less  efficient speakers.  That one is for day-time listening at much higher volumes!

I think I won't give up either one as both has different fortes and beauties in themselves...

Cheers,

Alper

Thanks for the reply Alper.
Could you say something of what you prefer in the SET?  Does it have a prettier sound than the P-P?

Hey Brian,

The SET, specifically, Decware's SETs with SV83s sound more airy up top and the details in the mid and treble registers are to die for.  Also the soundstage is really amazing. with my TABOO.  I find them a bit bass shy unless you can find the proper speakers that go well with them.  But even with my 91dB B&W's with power-sucking crossovers, they sound fine in the bass compartment, as I benefit from mechanical coupling by using the walls behind and to the side of the speakers.

Sounding "pretty" might be a function of how a specific topology is implemented.  I heard some push-pulls that sound too tubey and some that sound almost like a SS.  My SET experience is very much confined to Decware's and some of the late Don Garber's designs.  So, I might be spoiled at that end!  :)

At the same time, with my 50-watt per channel push-pull Copland (which I upgraded all the inner wiring with DH Labs later on), I enjoy listening to music more than I used to before.

All good!  :)

Best,

Alper
