Title: Component Rack Help
Post by bikehappy1 on 04/21/17 at 20:14:54

The decent racks out there are expensive. Would it be better to have the amp on a separate rack/stand from the TT? It would be nice to have the amp on top because the switches are more accessible and the TT needs to be on top too. I've seen some DIY racks that look pretty good. The ZRack is nice but I think I'd like a wider one. Advice and suggestions would be great.

Bikehappy1 - I ended up buying two Salamander Archtype 5 shelf systems and cutting the all thread to the length I need at work (machine shop) and put my TT on the top with all the Decware gear and other source etc. spread out. No heat issues and plenty of open access to all the Decware controls. Keep us posted on what you end up doing. I spent a few weeks trying to figure out what to do without spending a billion $$. You can DIY the Archtype system if you have some wood working skills. Happy listening, Chris.

You could try building your own. I preferred a side by side set up. Since I am using a mapleshade maple platform, isoblocks and brass feet under both my SACD and ZMA I felt my vibration issues were neutral.  The hardware chain had nice 2x2 for legs and bracing and I laminated 3 18x48x1/2 furniture grade boards together for the top. I borrowed a radial saw to make the cuts and glued and screwed the stand together. I am not a carpenter so I designed the construction to be easy and still have a rigid and solid stand. I used the spray paint that creates a heavy texture to hide my imperfections . I spent about $100.00. DIY on some things let you apply funds to equipment and music.

Ive marveled at how ridiculous, and ridiculously expensive that audio racks can be. Where I live there was included a heavy marble topped table intended for use in a kitchen. It is about 36 wide and plenty deep enough to place a TT beside a Tori Mk IV with enough room in front to lay tubes, headphones, an LP cover. The second shelf is plywood to accommodate a receiver CD, ZStage, cable box and computer router. A bottom shelf accommodates LPs. This piece performs exceptionally well and I'm taking it with me when I should ever move. Because the mass of the marble sI have never emcountered any instability or vibration issues using this as a stand.
