Title: SE84UFO2 Power
Post by Barnharty on 01/22/17 at 23:29:59

In the manual for the amp it recommends plugging it into the wall directly or a certain power conditioner. I don't have enough outlets and have mine plugged into a power strip. Am I missing out sound-wise by doing this?

Get yourself a Trip Lite Medical Isolation Transformer, ISO500 or ISO1000. Get rid of the power strip.

Agree on the Tripp Lite isolation transformer. I have all my equipment connected to two ISO1000's.

Interesting subject.  I am thinking about adding an ISO transformer for my MacMini.  Are there any guidelines for how big or small the transformer should be?

I am eying a B&K Precision 1604A with a continuous output current of 1.25A but am not sure this is big enough

Are there any cheaper options?

I think everything is relative, if you're only powering a Zen, you can get the ISO250. It is $181. Not going to get much cheaper than that.

A MacMini pulls 7W IIRC. Looks like it peaks at 30W after doing some quick research. So the ISO250 should be fine for a Mini.

I currently use this:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AC215

I have a Tripp Lite isolation transformer but still had some low level sub hum. Since switching to the Furman my audio system is dead quiet.

The unit itself has no fan, no buzzing, completely silent.

DBC - That is great to condition power, 100% agree. It wont help if you have a ground loop per se. There are lots of choices here, even all the way up to a $5k PS Audio Power Plant! :-)

Ron, Barnharty made it clear that he is looking for affordable options. Actually the Furman unit did help with a ground loop issue I had with twin powered subs. This was the main benefit over my Tripp Lite.

Barnharty, Sweetwater has an excellent return policy so it would cost you little to give it a try.  If you hear no benefit in your home with your system then return for a refund.

Good Luck.

Yea, I know... I was being sarcastic (w/ PS Audio). Everything is relative when it comes to cost.

The ISO250 and the Furman are right at the same price point of ~200.

With Amazon's and Sweetwater's return policy, it would be prudent to try both and see what suits his needs best. Both are great options.

Just don't plug your Decware gear into this: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-6-Outlet-Surge-Protector-Power/dp/B00TP1C51M/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1485175771&sr=8-5&keywords=power+strip

As with everything here, YMMV. A lot depends on your local power grid and what you have plugged in and running @ home.

Ciao,
Ron

That little Furman unit is interesting.  I've never seen that before.  The price is right, too.

What if you were to take the Furman that DBC mentioned and plug one of these into it https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002D017M/ref=pd_aw_fbt_267_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=V53YKWMC5BVXBACVXQ40

Would you still receive the same benefits?

Maybe plug the Amp into one of the two outlets and then that power strip into the other one for the turntable, phono pre, etc

Thanks for the note on the MacMini.  I will take a look at it.

if you've ever been to a Zenfest... take a look around the Zenmaster's shop... you will see the Tripplite isolation transformer units all over the place....  I'm just saying......
