Title: Speaker Cable Question
Post by effluviography on 03/06/16 at 05:15:28

Hello all,

Long time reader, only occasional poster. I have a lovely Mini-torii (V1), with Cifte 12au7 and RCA 6V6 that sounds great. Coupled with a ZP-3 with Amperex 12ax7, Mullard 12au7 and RCA 5y3. A Pro-ject deck with an Ortofon Bronze is feeding it, using Decware Interconnects, both with Decware upgraded power cords. I've rolled a lot of tubes and I'm quite happy with the combo I've got now.

It all sounds great as is. However, I'd like to upgrade my speaker cables. I'm using Belden Speaker wire from Blue Jeans Cable and I'm wondering what to go with for the upgrade. Looking at a fairly modest budget of $200 for 5' of cable. My thoughts thus far:

Anti cables Level 3
Kimber VS8
Decware Styx unterminated

I know this is difficult territory with many opinions. I listen to indie rock, classic rock/pop, jazz and noisey rock. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you kindly,

Scott

Forgot to mention that the speaker cables are going to Blumenstein Orca speakers in a near field desktop set up with a dungeness sub fed by the out from the Mini-torii.

I'm using Kimber 8PR with my mini torri and Ref3A de Capos.  Used this with other amps/speakers and really like them.  I biwire my de capos but they also make a nice 4TC and 4PR cable.

Hi

Not sure how much they cost, but shouldn't be to much more than your budget, check out ZenWaveAudio, it's a one man firm I got to know via the Audio circle Omega Loudspeakers forum. Just google it though. I have both speaker and IC from him and really like them.

BTW

I ordered yesterday a ZP3 from Decware and have MT (v2) just as you have. How far apart do these amps need to be from each other to avoid some sort of radiation. Or do they need space at all? Sorry for my  broken English..

side by side is fine I have read that one above the other can be a problem

Blumenstein sells cables, haven't tried them, thinking about it they are affordable

My ZP3 is about a foot from the Mini-Torii. Not because of noise problems but due to the arrangement of my space.

I purchased a blumenstein cable set to use with my sub. Don't use it anymore. Not impressed. Very thin and sound quality was nothing special. Haven't tried the speaker cables per se, but after the sub experience I don't think they are worth the money.

Really hope they don't affect each other. They will placed less than an inch apart. At least for a while. I'm building a second system in a more dedicated listening room and I'm planning to have a streaming only setup in my livingroom and vinyl setup upstairs. So I'm in need of an amp aswell..  maybe or probably Zen Select, the upside should be the opportunity vary the amps and speakers in the two rooms

Hello all,

Just an update on my speaker cable journey. So, I've tried the Anti-cable Level 2 & 3, blue-jeans belden cables, Western Electric, and Decware Speaker Cables. Hands down, the Decware are the winners. Anti-cables - level 3 are much better than the level 2. They are very detailed with extended/smooth highs and nice bass response, but muted mids and a little clinical for my setup. Western Electric have a nice balance of highs, mids and bass but are veiled - softened too much. Blue Jeans are a good cable for general purposes, but when you move to anti-cable and decware cables, you understand what "hifi" means.

So, with my setup of a Mini-torii (V1), with Omega Super 3i speakers using RCA 6V6 and Brimar 13D5 with a Blumenstein Dungeness Sub, I can say the Decware are the strongest. Extended highs, weighty but articulate bass and slightly emphasized mids.

I'll note that I upgraded from Blumenstein Orca speakers to Omega Super 3i speakers. That was a HUGE improvement. The Orcas are nice, musical and slightly warm speakers. The Omegas have so much more detail and soundstage in my desktop setup. And as the Omegas are now cheaper than the Orcas, I wholeheartedly recommend them over the Orcas (which are now in my small office setup at work.)

I'll add that my sources for the Omega/Mini-Torii setup are Marantz SACD-8005 to Zbox and Pro-Ject with Ortofon Bronze to ZP3. I use Decware silver and studio ICs and a few Wireworld Oasis 7 ICs too. Combining the right ICs makes a world of difference. All Decware upgraded power cords too.
