Title: ZP3 Hook Up
Post by KMokc on 05/14/14 at 00:53:04

The ZP3 has landed. Now for the hookup, the online manual has the input/outputs on the front of the phono amp. My amp has the inputs/outputs on the back and I need to know which is which? Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Kevin :-/

I'm not at home but from memory it should be input on the right, output on the left.

Congrats! What a machine!

Yes, a faq, the terminals nearest the outside edge are the output.

HI Lon,
It sounds pretty good right out of the box. I'm on the second set of 5hours on and 5 off. Just letting it run for now and not really listening.  The stock tubes are Jan OA3, 5Y3GT,Sovtek 12AX7's, and a 12AU7 didn't check brand.

I have NOS tubes to try in it. Here is what I currently have Mazda 5Y3GB ( this is one of the best tubes I've had in my Zen. Then I have Brimar & National OA3's, National & RCA OD3's (read these could be used?). ECC83/12AX7 Mullards, Raytheon 7025 (12AX7). For the 12AU7 spot I have 3, they are RCA Clear Top, Ken Rad and last Arcturus 5963(12AU7).

Any suggestions on different tubes? Also running Grover Huffman phone and interconnects.

Also Lon thanks for the info on where the input/outputs were located.

Kevin  :)

Awesome Kevin! Sounds like you have some great tubes. Yes, you can use OD3 but they may be bass-light, try them though. I'm running Raytheon in the 12AU7 and 12AX7 spots (Steve shipped me a Raytheon 12AU7 that didn't sound great til the ZP3 was broken in, and I bought a pair of 12AX7 Raytheon from Mike (tgarden) before I got the amp--he said they were great in there and he was right. A lot of other tubes I've tried sound really good as well, so it's a preamp that is hard to make sound bad! I'm using a coke-bottle shaped RCA OA3, and I'm using an old RCA 5Y3GT. . . may try an RCA 5V4 one of these days.

I just Bought a new Music Hall 7.1 sounds great...My other TT didn't have a ground wire but this does the ground wire has a connector designed to have a screw retain it the amp has a hole with with a red plastic shrowd on it how does that connection work?

I use an extra speaker cable plug (male) from my stash that fits perfect.

You may insert bare wire int the hole and insert a wood screw, a tampered wood dowel, etc, to hold in the wire. Or just create a half loop in the Bare wire and friction will hold the ground wire in.

By the way, the two 12ax7 tubes, may be different (no matched pairs needed as each tube performs a different function ( I have a Mazda 12ax7 in the front slot and a Telefunken 12ax7 in the second spot along with a Raytheon "Organ" tube (Baldwin) for the 12au7 slot.

I clipped the connector off of my TT ground and soldered on a banana clip to go into the ZP3.  You can also use a screw from the top plate but it wont look as nice.
