Title: SE84ZS and Klipsch Heresies
Post by Lon on 04/07/13 at 00:45:08

Okay I spent some time with a friend of mine today. He has had my Rev. A Zen amp (#27 built by Steve) for years on "loan" and he bought a Taboo last year . . . and he prefers #27.  So he gets to keep it a bit longer as it will only sit on a shelf in my care. He wants to buy a Super Zen, and has talked with Steve, but he's unsure which of the speaker impedance choices to make, for speakers between 2 and 6 ohms OR for speakers between 6 and 16 ohms. He pairs the Zen amp with Klipsch Heresies. . . .

Any advice based on experience appreciated. Thanks.

Lon,

I had the same choice to make. My 12 year old Zen had the 4-6 ohm output transformers. I run Klipsch 8 ohm 101db RF-7's. Looks like the Heresies are 8 ohm 99db.

I ordered the CKC with 6-16 ohm transformers and it plays louder and stronger than the old Zen on my RF-7's

Thanks DBC. He's looking for a bit more of a laid back sound (ha! on those speakers). Which do you think would give that "feel"? Thanks!

Lon, what type of music does your friend listen to primarily ??

Quite a variety of rock, jazz and classical.

Lon, one option for your friend are Parker Audio 95's specifically designed for the Zen. I have the earlier floor standing version, but am not sure how the redesigned 95's might sound.

I have a 10-year old Select tweaked by Eddie Vaughn: that and the Parker's sound sublime. (No sub used)

Parker Audio 95MK II Loudspeakers Reviewed (These are the older versions. May need to check with Dave if these are still built).

Sometimes available used. Here's a pair of 95 Signatures for sale on Agon...

Thanks Ray. He has a number of pairs of speakers and I'm not sure he wants to invest in yet another pair!

I think he'd be fine with either opt option.  My se84 w/ standard opt (low imp) do fine, really fine, with heritage.  But it's not exactly "laid back", more like ruthlessly revealing, brutally honest perhaps, but still fine.
