Title: My ZOB's are finally making noise!
Post by Damien on 10/06/11 at 04:54:48

The DFR8's came in Monday evening. My DIY Zen Open Baffle speakers have been mostly completed since about March. I am on the list for FRX drivers but I could wait no longer and ordered the DFR8's.  ;D  It's only money... So I had a few small things to finish on the ZOB's mainly to do with attaching the sliding baffle. Did that Monday (worked Tuesday..grr..), today I cut the speaker holes, attached the front baffles and then attached the speakers.

They're playing now from my CSP2+ and Taboo. Sound great!

Here are the ZOB's in my shop right after they were done.  That's Bird's Eye Maple veneer with solid Walnut edge dressing (picture frame style)

Ok, now lets see the back and sides

You don't want to see the back and sides.. these are not the back and sides your looking for (waves hand at 4krow)

Seriously.. they are made from OSB and painted flat black. I plan to veneer them with something even if it gets painted black again, to get rid of the OSB surface texture.... Oh ok here if you must, is every pic I have of them

Not sure yet. I have always used foam rubber in the past but that was back in my high school daze. Seems a bit dense to be using in a speaker these days, at least the stuff I had would be. There are different grades of foam though...

Not likely to use anything until I am sure they are broken in, then experiment.

I have used poly fiberfill in my ZOBs  (pillow stuffing). There are a variety of choices, each with a different effect. I once even used memory foam in an enclosure, but in that case, you have to account for the volume that the foam takes up. Good ol fiberglas insulation is still an option, regardless of the fact it is not fun to work with.
