Title: Wrong sv 83
Post by drumsgreg on 02/09/11 at 23:38:20

I just bought some sv83 to try out in my amp, but these have the small s logo on them that Steve warned about.I was told these were current and would not hurt my amp. What will happen to the amp if they are the wrong ones. Thanks Greg

Greg: I wouldn't use them. If Steve wrote that they are not to be used  "in any DECWARE amplifier" that is good enough warning for me. Anyway, the SV83's are non military. Try some regular 6P15P-EV instead.

I just ordered a few 6P15P of of eBay (it doesn't have the -EV). I didn't realize it was missing the -EV until after I bought them. Do you think that I'll be able to use these tubes in my Taboo? Or will they end up being this year's Christmas tree ornaments?

You should be able to. The EV designation means that they were built stronger and last longer. But the reality is that the amp will be sitting still and will not be subject to vibration and shock. Therefore, the only attribute of the EV that you lose is the longer life.  Tube life is theoretical anyway. Some can last longer than others.

That's great news, Rivieraranch. My main concern is to be able to take advantage of the Hazen Grid Mod with those tubes (sans EV). I really like the sound shift. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my father, on his Motorola tube stereo console, would activate the Vibrasonic switch. It pushed the sound from flat to 3D. The Hazen Grid Mod adds an incredible dimension to the Taboo's already fantastic sound stage.
