Title: Taboo output
Post by waveydavey on 02/26/10 at 20:07:34

Hey all :)   Been enjoying my Anniversary Taboo since Aug/06

Just a question: I have been using it this whole time just with a cd player that outputs the usual 2 volts and no pre-amp etc..

I think I read that if you're only feeding an output of 2 volts into the Taboo from the source, you can listen with the volume all the way up and still be well under power and not clipping the amp.. Is this true?

Using fe108sigma's 90db sens...

Thanks :)

If you are using a 12AU7 or 12AT7 input tube, it should be hard to clip with only a 2 volt source.

Thanks Steve :)

Been using a RCA 5Y3GT,  JJ EL-84 and Tung Sol 12AX7  mostly.

Source is a Yamaha Natural Sound CD player 5 disc CDC- 506, connected to the Taboo via Decware Siver Reference half meter interconnects..

Fostex fe108sigmas in inverted BIB cabs..

Used to be here as DaveCan, now WaveyDavey lol  :)

If you go to a 5U4GB rectifier it would possibly boost things a little bit. I have my TABOO running with a Ah! Njoe Tjoeb player which is set at 2 and a half volts output. I have had the volume control all the way up and it did not clip. I recommend a CSP2 in front of the TABOO. It will take the amp to new heights and add much weight and authority to the sound. It is a whole different amp with the preamplifier in front. Other than that if you could find a CD player with a variable output and take it up to 5 volts that would be good, too.

Thanks for the tips :)

There still seems to be some conflicting info when you read the Taboo page..  It talks about using the 12at7 and 5U4, then it goes on to say like it did back in 2006, that it was designed around the 5y3gt and still appears to be shipped that way.. Also back in 2006 it was shipped with the 12ax7..

Steve what in your opinion is the best sounding tube configuration to you, to use in the pre Hazen modded Anniversary Taboo, when using only a 2volt source, and also when using a preamp or higher output source?

Thanks :)

The 5Y3 is the "starting point" in the tube journey with the Taboo. The Hazen grid mod works only when using the SV83 tubes; it has no effect on the EL84 tube.

The JJ's are good and the 12AX7 will maximize your gain up front. However, you may notice a difference with a 5U4 rectifier. The preamp will transform the system. Then you may want to back off and use a 12AU7 or 12AT7 in the Taboo.
