Title: Annoying crackling and popping sounds - tube relat
Post by Rivieraranch on 02/25/10 at 01:10:43

I suspect one of the JJ power tubes I'm using now.

My Mini Torii is up at DECWARE being looked over. So I brought my TABOO home from the office. While there it has been running from 4-8 hours per day. While at home I have been letting it run for a few days without turning it off. Today it began making some popping and cracking noises from the speakers. These were not real loud, just annoying enough to suggest that one or more of the tubes was acting up.

The tubes are an NOS Westinghoue 5U4GB rectifier; 2 JJ power tubes, and a 1957 JAN Sylvania 12AT7WA tube.

I automatically suspect the JJ's as cause of this problem. I am going to get to the bottom of this if it is the last thing I do.

What tube would you suspect as being guilty of cracking and popping?

Now I had the CSP2 hooked up to the TABOO. I changed all the tubes in the TABOO and the sounds persisted. I turned the TABOO off and then I heard the cracking and popping from the headphones while using the CSP2. I changed the front input tube of the CSP2, an already known to be microphonicEH 6922. But I don't think this caused the trouble. But now it appears that the trouble is with the CSP2. When I turn the trim pots in the rear I hear that same popping and crackling.

TABOO is in the clear. Back the CSP2 goes for a full checkup.
