Title: Rectifier valves what can I use ?
Post by davewhit58 on 01/02/10 at 13:59:50

had my amplifer a few days and its fantastic even out the box not yet run it it sings :)

like others i will soon be tempted to try different valves now it came with  5U4G  which a quick web search tells me is the same as a GZ34

Yet on another forum users of this amp tell me they have tried  GZ32 valves
one long term user says it says here that you can use GZ32 ( not yet found said post)

has anyone a list of all valves that can be used in this great amp ?

thanks in advance

On the Decware site main page for this amp, Steve wrote:

The rectifier is a 5U4G and can be substituted with a 5AR4 or compatible rectifier. Many owners of this amp like using the 274B. Each rectifier change will also make audible differences in the sound and performance of the amplifier.

Personally of those type listed that I've heard I always like the 5U4G best.

Yes, the GZ32 will work great.

I'm terribly addicted to the Mullard GZ32 (but haven't tried the 274b's).

Another rectifier that's more reasonable in cost than the GZ32 is the electrically similar 5V4, which is my second best favorite.

It could be that preferences are somewhat speaker specific. I need to revisit the 5U4 since switching my speakers around this last year, for example.

Hi Karl,

I didn't know the 5V4 would work in that amp. I used that in my Select, an RCA, loved it.

That one's gonna sound nice.

To my ear, very liquid; not as hard sounding as the 5U4x family.

To add to the confusion, I use the  Mullard CV593 which is the military numbering system, although exactly identical to the GZ32.

We're in a world where tubes can cost more than the gear.

I just purchased the following tubes-all are 5u4GB,one Sylvania, one Westinghouse, and one Raytheon.

Before I start rolling I would like some input, what's the front runner amongst this trio?

Thank you,
Lacee
